Summary of Job Duties:
The Genetic Counselor will provide genetic counseling to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. This position will assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based on analysis of the risk, benefit, and cost. The Genetic Counselor will review implications with the patient and provides crisis intervention regarding unexpected genetic conditions. This position educates physicians and health professionals and ensures appropriate patient referral and care.

Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from a school accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling.
  • Board eligible or board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics.
  • Obtains Arkansas Licensure for Genetic Counseling.


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Provides education and genetic counseling to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Gathers medical, developmental and family history and recommends medical or genetic testing.

  • Provides test results and educates patient/family on the significance of the results.

  • Reviews inheritance patterns and determines at risk family members.

  • Works closely with physicians in a wide variety of clinical specialties to help integrate genetics into patient care.

  • Stays current on information regarding specific genetic syndromes, available testing and research opportunities.

  • Assists in writing publication, giving presentations at conferences and recruiting patients for research.

  • Provides educational presentations to healthcare professionals and community groups regarding the role of genetics in health and disease.

  • Supervises the work of assigned personnel, including assigning and reviewing work, providing guidance and conducting performance evaluations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
