Job description

The Tax Technology Lead will lead and own our configuration, implementation, and evolution of the Vertex Tax platform.  They will collaborate with functional leaders in Tax and R&D, to improve Toast tax platform, daily operations, and strategic tax initiatives. The role will apply proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help maximize the benefit of Toast’s investment in the Vertex platform, while being familiar with Tax best practices.

About this roll* (Responsibilities) 

  • Configuring, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance of Vertex OSeries, Vertex Edge, and other additional Vertex products
  • Identify and assess tax technology risks and opportunities and develop solutions to mitigate risks and capitalize on opportunities
  • Evaluate the existing tax technology framework and proactively identify future tax technology needs, including opportunities for process improvements, automation, data management, and application of best practices
  • Partner with Financial Systems and Engineering teams to provide Tax Engine technical requirements and design, develop, test, document, implement and support solutions
  • Provide guidance and systems training to Tax, Business Systems, and R&D Teams, as well as other departments within the organization, on tax technology matters
  • Actively participating in projects throughout their lifecycle - from design through delivery - with an emphasis on testing to ensure that projects conform to the business requirements and rules
  • Assist in reviewing, executing, monitoring, and documenting internal controls with respect to tax systems to mitigate risk and maximize data integrity
  • Participate in state and local audit data extractions, including reconciling tax reporting to the ERP system where required

Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

  • Direct experience with MPF (Marketplace Facilitator) requirements for tax compliance
  • Experience in a corporate tax or business systems department, public accounting or technology consulting firm or other related experience
  • Experience with US and international indirect taxes
  • Hands-on experience implementing, configuring, and maintaining Vertex O Series on-demand application
  • Understanding of ERP solutions (Oracle, Netsuite) and the impact on tax reporting and general ledger
  • Expertise in pulling data from databases, reviewing XML/JSON logs, and understanding the error codes being returned by Tax Engines (Vertex O Series)
  • Ability to work with the support team of the SaaS providers (Vertex) to manage issues, follow internal SDLC processes, and act as internal support for the tax platform
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to analyze complex tax issues, identify trends and patterns, and make data-driven recommendations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with business leaders and cross-functional stakeholders

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions if eligible), equity, and benefits.
Pay Range
$140,000$224,000 USD
