What would you do in this role?
The Motley Fool US Membership serves over 600,000 paying subscribers, empowering them to become smarter, happier, and richer. In the past 15 months, we have significantly enhanced our technological capabilities to elevate our offerings. This position is ideal for someone who thrives on working with cutting-edge technology and building exceptional products.
As the Director of Product Technology, you will oversee the ongoing evolution of the technology that directly impacts our members' experience. In this role, you will lead teams of front-end developers, back-end developers, mobile developers, and UX designers. Our current tech stack includes NextJS, TypeScript, Python, Django, Postgres, React, React Native, AWS Infrastructure, Docker, and GraphQL.
A typical week in this position involves coordinating work across the various teams under your leadership, actively participating in the interview process to rapidly expand the team, collaborating with product owners, and providing guidance on architectural decisions that influence current projects. Some of the exciting initiatives currently underway in areas overseen by the Director of Product Technology include the integration of data-intensive customer-facing research tools, a complete overhaul of our mobile app, and a significant re-architecture of our back-end infrastructure.

Our toolset includes cutting-edge resources like Claude, Github CoPilot, Chat GPT, and Cursor.sh. If there are additional tools that could enhance our capabilities, we have dedicated teams ready to investigate and implement them. As the Director of Product Technology, you will also have the support of various teams, including Project Managers, Cloud Ops, Cyber Security, HR, and more. What do you need to apply?
- 7+ years of experience building medium to large-scale consumer-facing applications
- 5+ years of experience managing teams of developers (10+ people)
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to inspire and mentor team members
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
- Deep understanding of NextJs, React, and vanilla JavaScript
- Strong grasp of architectural concepts and experience making high-level architectural decisions
- Experience using GraphQL or similar frameworks
- Background as a developer and individual contributor in a team setting
- Familiarity with Python/Django
- Experience working with CDNs and other technology providers to enhance site performance
- Proficiency in using AI tooling for development
- Experience with Docker
- Comfortable working in a remote environment
It’s even better if you have…
- Experience with Microsoft Playwright or Cypress.io for automation testing
- Familiarity with Sanity, Wagtail, or other CMS systems
- Experience with mobile app development using React Native
- Knowledge of monitoring tools like Data Dog and Sentry
- Experience with AWS services such as Lambda, DynamoDB, and S3
