Job description

Netflix is one of the world’s leading entertainment services with 283 million paid memberships in over 190 countries enjoying TV series, films and games across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can play, pause and resume watching as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, and can change their plans at any time.

The Role

Our goal is to make it effortless to stream content across a wide range of viewing contexts and devices – from commuting underground on the subway, to watching in a desktop browser, or projecting in 4K at home. Supporting such a broad range of streaming experiences requires intricate design and coordination of infrastructure systems behind the scenes. To do this, Netflix encodes content into files that are distributed to our content delivery network, then adaptively streamed by a wide range of devices.

This analytics engineering role is at the intersection of the systems that deliver the Netflix entertainment experience, inclusive of on demand, (record-breaking) live, and ads-supported streaming video offerings.  You will join the team of Analytics Engineers, Data Scientists, and Data Engineers who partner with our infrastructure engineering teams to create metrics, perform analysis, and develop the tools and data products that help us make better decisions about our infrastructure and its impact on our product’s quality of experience.

What you’ll do:

  • Motivate and prioritize the development of systems that align data collection, analysis, and experimentation across Open Connect, AWS, and client streaming delivery systems.

  • Understand how data, analytics, experimentation, and algorithms can play an impactful role in new and existing innovative uses of the content delivery infrastructure.

  • Help align data science and engineering resources against the most important problems in this space.

  • Identify opportunities to provide technical guidance and mentorship to teammates.

  • Translate valuable insights and data from this domain to initiatives in other parts of the business.

You have:

  • A passion to combine deep expertise in data science and engineering with a detailed understanding of distributed systems engineering and networking.

  • Advanced training in a quantitative field (Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Economics, etc) or commensurate work experience.

  • Fluency in SQL, workflow orchestration tools like Apache Airflow, and at least one analytics and scripting language like Python.

  • Experience prototyping pipelines of moderate complexity on massive data sets, with the ability to effectively partner with data engineering teams building more scalable solutions for the most important use cases.

  • Experience in building strong relationships with stakeholders and colleagues to tackle big, cross-functional problems.

  • The demonstrated ability to communicate technical and analytical concepts clearly and concisely among audiences at many different levels.

  • The interest to build and foster technical communities internally (e.g., horizontal forums, seminars, and summits) and externally (e.g., conference participation).

  • Comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to thrive with minimal oversight and process.

  • Embodied the Netflix values while bringing a new perspective to continue improving our culture.
