Summary of Job Duties:
Associate Staff Scientist, is available in Dr. Mohammad Rahman’s lab at UAMS to study gene expression regulation in cancer and genetic disorders and develop RNA-based targeted therapies. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to diverse research projects in a collaborative environment, focusing on transcription, RNA splicing, mRNA decay, RNA structures, and protein interactions.
Qualifications:
- PhD Degree in Biomedical Sciences or related. Postdoctoral or equivalent work experience 5+ years of laboratory experience in RNA splicing, transcriptional regulation, proteomics, RNA secondary structure, and computational analysis on molecular target screening using next generation sequencing
- RNA-sequencing, RT-PCR, RT-qPCR, RNA-pulldown, MS2-mediated artificial tethering, knockdown using siRNA/ShRNA/CRISPR, cDNA overexpression, protein-protein interaction and quantitative mass spectrometry, antisense pharmacology, developing transgenic cell line for gene knock-out using CRISPR or other technologies or knock-in mutant gene, microscopic imaging, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in protein expression and purification using other cell hosts (mammalian, yeast, insect cell).
- RNA secondary structure analysis and transcriptional regulation using luciferase reporter assay.

Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on RNA biology and gene expression in cancer and genetic diseases.
- Performs target screening (e.g., RNA-sequencing), validation (e.g., RT-PCR/RT-qPCR), mechanistic studies (e.g., RNA-pulldown, CRISPR, cDNA overexpression), and protein interaction analysis.
- Utilizes advanced techniques like quantitative mass spectrometry and antisense pharmacology.
- Trains students, postdocs, and staff in lab techniques.
- Develops new research projects and ensure efficient lab operations with adherence to best practices.
- Prepares and publish research manuscripts.
- Presents findings at national and international conferences.
- Contributes to grant applications and progress reports.
- Other Duties as Assigned.
- Supports additional projects and departmental initiatives as needed.
