About the role
As Controller, you will lead and shape our organization's accounting operations. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will be responsible for developing and executing comprehensive financial controls and procedures that support the organization's goals. You will work closely with executive-level and program staff to develop and maintain accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with GAAP and federal grant requirements. You will develop and implement accounting processes, including financial reporting, budget management, audit preparation, and internal control oversight. This role combines hands-on accounting expertise with strategic financial analysis to support our organization's growth and long-term sustainability.
The position requires proven experience in nonprofit accounting and federal grant management, coupled with a detail-oriented mindset and commitment to advancing clean energy accessibility.
In this role, you’ll primarily be responsible for
Financial Operations and Analysis
- Perform core accounting tasks, including managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger entries, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Oversee monthly and year-end close processes, preparing financial statements and supporting documentation for timely review by the CFO
- Reconcile bank statements, balance sheet accounts, and other financial records to maintain accuracy and accountability
- Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, providing clear and relevant financial insights to the CFO and leadership
- Conduct variance analysis, identifying budget performance trends and offering recommendations to optimize resource allocation
- Support grant and program funding requests by preparing financial analyses and relevant reports
- Lead the development and automation of financial systems and processes, driving innovation and ensuring efficient, scalable operations
Financial Planning and Cash Flow
- Serve as a financial expert, leading and managing the budgetary cycle in coordination with department heads and executive leadership
- Oversee all project and grant accounting, ensuring expenditures align with grant and program budgets throughout the funding period
- Collate and prepare financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants
- Track budget performance against planned expenditures and advise leadership on adjustments as needed to meet financial targets
- Monitor cash flow to ensure sufficient liquidity for operations and strategic initiatives
- Manage restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring compliance with donor restrictions and effective financial resource allocation
Core qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
- 5+ years of progressive experience in finance or accounting within a nonprofit
- 2+ years of experience with federal grants
- In-depth understanding of GAAP, nonprofit accounting principles, and compliance requirements
- Proficiency in accounting software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated experience in communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board or other outside partners
- Ability to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
- Passion for clean energy and a commitment to advancing sustainability and environmental stewardship
Preferred qualifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Experience with QuickBooks Online

What we offer
The expected annual salary range for this position is $110,000-$120,000, commensurate with qualifications and location. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare insurance coverage, professional development, and retirement.
This role is a remote opportunity and open to applicants across the United States, with a preference for those based in the communities we serve. Currently we have team members in Houston and Austin. Occasional travel may be required for meetings, conferences, and other external engagements.
