Job Title: Medical Technologist Quality Lead

The Medical Technologist Quality-Lead shall have a thorough knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Science and shall demonstrate proficiency in the skills and practices of Transfusion Medicine. The Lead Technologist shall show good judgment with attention to detail as well as respect for patient rights to confidentiality. Work requires above average accuracy, and shall demonstrate competency in quality management, critical thinking, interpersonal skills and transfusion medicine. They shall assist the Supervisor in maintaining laboratory standards in accordance with accrediting bodies, including, but not limited to AABB, CAP, CDC, CLIA, FACHT, FDA, JCAHO, and HCFA. He/she shall be responsible for the Quality Assurance Program for Transfusion Service to include; quality monitors, trends and indicator reports. The Medical Technologist Lead shall provide current Good Manufacturing (cGMP) training and education for Transfusion Service employees, students, residents, fellows and other employees. The Lead Technologist shall interact courteously and professionally with co-workers, medical staff, patients, visitors, and others. The Lead Technologist shall demonstrate the ability to perform several tests/tasks concurrently with accuracy and within established turnaround times. The Lead will actively interface with all hospital personnel and Medical Staff to represent the Laboratory in a positive fashion. The employee shall actively support the policies of the Laboratory and hospital.

Responsibilities:
  1. Submits feedback to the Transfusion Medicine Manager quality evaluations of Transfusion Service employees.
  2. Attends departmental meetings and other meetings on as need basis
  3. Communicates to staff consistently through staff meetings, and training, and emails.
  4. Recommends and implements improvements necessary to achieve operational goals and to improve patient outcomes. Monitors quality control, antibody panel workup, etc. for section.
  5. Serves in a problem-solving role for the department.
  6. Provides support, as necessary, to ensure that accreditation standards are met and adheres to all regulatory, compliance and medical necessity guidelines.
  7. Supports Laboratory and Hospital Management and uses the concept of managing up people and positions to staff.
  8. Completes all education requirements in addition to 8 hours of continuing education for self-60 days in advance of annual evaluation.
  9. Assists with orientation, training and education of Transfusion Service employees, students, residents, fellows and other employees.
  10. Ensures compliance of self and staff with Infection Control and Safety Policies.
  11. Writes and/or edits Policies and Procedures in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. Demonstrates comprehension of all procedures within the department as defined in the Procedure Manuals; ensures staff comprehension. Reviews Manuals biannually, assists with revisions. Assists with the development and implementation of standard work.
  12. Utilizes process improvement and rapid improvement events to implements changes to ensure operational goals are achieved. Coordinates the development, management and maintenance of QA and QC standards in accordance with Medicare, CAP and JCAHO standards. Maintains proficiency testing in accordance with CAP and CLIA.
  13. Maintains technical skills in the Transfusion Medicine department and works as necessary.
  14. Assists with direct observation to ensure staff perform processes correctly and in the standardized work manner.
  15. Ensures equipment is properly maintained with appropriate documentation and prepares work orders to repair broken equipment.
  16. Monitors supply inventory to maintain adequate stock and communicates needs to appropriate person.
  17. Creates a culture of teamwork. Establishes and leads effective work groups and teams
  18. Interfaces with other departments in a collaborative, professional manner and works closely with Supervisors.
  19. Promotes customer service excellence by responding quickly to inquiries/requests by researching and resolving internal and external questions.
  20. Leads team huddles.
  21. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

  • BS in Medical Technology with four years experience required.
  • MT (ASCP) in Transfusion Medicine (AMT, HEW or equivalent), required.

 

 

           Experience (required and preferred):

  • Previous supervisory and compliance experience and personal computer skills are preferred.
  • Familiarity with AABB standards preferred.
