The primary focus of the AEMT is to provide basic and advanced limited emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system and for those patients who require non-emergency or interfacility medical transport. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. AEMTs function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. AEMTs perform interventions with the equipment typically found on an ambulance. The AEMT is a link into the health care system and resource for routine and interfacility transports.

Minimum Requirements: 

National Registry of AEMTs Emergency Medical Technician certification 

West Virginia Office of EMS AEMT Certification   

Valid Driver’s License 

Emergency Vehicle Operations Course or ability to successfully complete within six (6) months of hire 

Valid BLS (Basic Life Support) for Healthcare Providers (AHA Preferred)  

Successful completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) within (1) month of hire 

IS 100: Introduction to the ICS System 

IS 200: Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response 

IS 700: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System 

IS 800: National Response Framework, an Introduction 

ITLS (International Trauma Life Support) or PHTLS (Prehospital Trauma Life Support) certification (obtained within 6 months of hire and renewed within 2 years of certification date) 

PEPP (Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers), PALS (Pediatric Life Support), or EPC certification (obtained within 6 months of hire and renewed within 2 years of certification date) 

Preferred additional certifications:  

AMLS (Advanced Medical List Support) or ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) 

GEMS 

Other relevant prehospital certifications 

 

Education:   

Possession of a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) 

Preferred criteria include associate, bachelor, or graduate level degree from a regionally accredited post-secondary educational institution   

 

Length of Service:   

No minimum requirement. 

Preferred include: 2 or more years of experience as a field provider at the AEMT level
