Description

PROGRAM OVERVIEW: 

Housed at the Huckleberry Youth Health Center in San Francisco, the Health Education team works in collaboration with: the Client Services team (Case Management + Therapy), the Create 2 Activate Project Coordinator, and the Cole St Clinic which is run in partnership with the Department of Public Health. The combined teams together provide free and confidential wraparound services for 12-24 year olds. In addition, this site provides basic needs support, Narcan and other Harm Reduction services. 

POSITION SUMMARY: 

As a member of the Health Education team, the Community Health Educator is responsible for providing sexual and reproductive health counseling in clinical settings, providing and facilitating educational workshops at partner sites, and conducting community outreach and youth enrichment programming throughout the city. The Community Health Educator is expected to work collaboratively on curriculum development and adaptation, social media curation, and activity documentation both in-person and virtually. The Community Health Educator will also be expected to serve clients between the ages of 12 and 24, travel throughout San Francisco, and use various virtual platforms including Salesforce, Google Suites, and Canva. In addition, Community Health Educators support the day to day Health Center flow by checking in youth, supporting navigation of the space, and access to Basic Needs. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Workshops:

  1. Facilitate culturally and developmentally appropriate health education and promotion in Middle Schools, High Schools,  and other Community Organizations 
  2. Administer surveys in Middle Schools, High Schools,  and other Community Organizations and document the data in Google Suites and incorporate any relevant feedback into future curriculum development
  3. Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the fields of sexual and reproductive health, reproductive justice, positive youth development, and client-centered care to support Senior CHE in curriculum development 
  4. Document sign in forms, exit surveys, and any other relevant workshop documentation into Salesforce in a timely manner

Outreach:

  1.  Participate in outreach activities and promote Huckleberry Youth Health Center services as well as the organization as a whole at school events,  Community Based Organization events, and others
    1. Outreach activities include: tabling, recruitment for programming, attending Community events (ex: Aids Walk), participating in Huckleberry Events (ex: Block Party) and other programming as needed
  2. Develop and promote Huckleberry Youth Health Center social media posts in collaboration with the Senior CHE, HYP Marin Health Education team, and the HYP Development team
  3. Develop education and promotion materials as needed 

Direct Service:

  1. Support with day to day Health Center tasks such as: answering phones, connecting youth to Clinic staff, organizing the space, restocking youth food, providing basic needs support, handing out Harm Reduction supplies, and others
    1. Assist clients in conversations around Family Planning and Emergency Contraception
    2. Attend the Department of Public Health HIV/HCV test counseling training and provided 1:1 counseling sessions, linkage, and navigation
    3. Refer clients to relevant support services and resources both at Huckleberry and in the community 
    4. Create safer and supportive environments where clients and participants feel comfortable discussing sensitive topics in 1:1 or group settings 

Site Specific:

  1.  Attend Health Center site meetings, program staff meetings, supervision meetings, agency meetings, and trainings regularly as assigned by the Program Coordinator or Director of Health Services
  2. Submit monthly staff reports, social media insights, and other requested data in a consistent and timely manner
  3. Support the training and professional development of community members including other Huckleberry staff on reproductive health, community trends, and any other relevant topics by maintaining up-to-date knowledge in the fields of sexual and reproductive health, reproductive justice, positive youth development, and client-centered care 
  4.  Other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator or Director of Health Services

 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to relate well to a diverse client population, other staff members, and the greater San Francisco community 

2. Sensitivity to and non-judgemental attitudes around various sexual and reproductive health concerns as they related to young people 

3. Comfort in clinical settings providing and advocating for client-centered care with emphasis on young people 

4. Understanding of public health principles around harm reduction, positive youth development, and behavior change 

5. Commitment to equity and justice based approaches to adolescent and sexual and reproductive health services 

6. Experience in training, teaching, or facilitating groups of youth

 7. Ability to stay organize and work collaboratively or independently as needed 

8. Adherence to HIPAA, Healthy Youth Act, Mandated Reporting, and other clinical and educational laws, protocols, and best practices 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

This position has no supervisory responsibilities. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

This position is an in-person position with work from home on a case by case basis depending on the needs of the site. This role might include taking public transit or the Huckleberry vehicle to meet with youth in a variety of settings, including schools and community-based organizations. The position also includes the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Huckleberry Youth Programs is located in San Francisco and is accessible by public transportation. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

This role must be able to sit comfortably in a car when driving for up to an hour at a time. This role requires the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend, sit or stand as necessary and climb stairs. This role must be comfortable with public speaking, teaching in a classroom setting for 4-6 hours at a time, and sitting at a desk for long periods of time. 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

1. Two years of experience in group facilitation, classroom management, curriculum development, social media creation, and/or strong direct service experience translatable to the Health Education responsibilities

2.Experience working with adolescents from marginalized communities.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Psychology, Education, or any related fields

2. Sexual and Reproductive Health Counselor Certification

3. Sexual and Reproductive Health Educator Certification  

5. Ability to teach workshops and to translate/develop materials in one of San Francisco's threshold languages 

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS: 

1. TB clearance 

2. Proof of Covid vaccination and current boosters

3. Valid First Aid Training certificate  within (x months of hire)

4. Valid CA driver’s license & clear DMV record
