Data Network Engineer

Vantage Point Solutions, a growing and dynamic telecommunications consulting and engineering firm, is seeking a qualified individual to join our team of professionals. We have an immediate opening for a Data Network Engineer at our office in Birmingham, AL.

Overview:

VPS is searching for individuals with a passion for network engineering and prepared for a fast-paced environment with the opportunity to work on many different network architectures across a diverse set of platforms. The Network Services team is comprised of a group of network specialists and network engineers with varying degrees of technical expertise. VPS is looking to grow the team and add experienced individuals to complement our existing staff.

This role is for a mid-level network engineer to work in our Birmingham, AL office. This is a full-time position. As a Data Network Engineer, you will provide network engineering services to our nationwide broadband provider client base. The role is very technical and hands-on with advanced network designs across many different platforms. The candidate will be required to manage multiple projects concurrently.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement, upgrade, maintain, troubleshoot, and support Internet Service Provider (ISP) network topologies and equipment including routers, switches, MPLS Routed Optical Networks (RON), and FTTx access equipment across various vendors
  • Work within a ticketing system to address client issues
  • Perform network hardening and architecture assessments
  • Evaluate networking equipment and software solutions for clients
  • Collaborate with team members across the networking, managed services, and IT security groups
  • Provide escalation role for Specialist/Tier 1 staff members to address client issues
  • Diagnose and remediate ISP network problems and outages
  • Escalate network issues to vendor Technical Assistance Centers (TAC) and collaborate on resolutions
  • Respond to and resolve customer service requests in a prompt, efficient and courteous manner
  • Develop Method of Procedures (MOP), configuration scripts, and supporting documentation for scheduled network maintenance
  • Perform periodic network maintenance including software upgrades, cutovers, intrusive changes, and diagnostics
  • Manage and documenting configuration changes and network architectures with tools including Excel, Word, and Visio
  • Describe technical information to non-technical individuals

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve technical issues efficiently and quickly
  • Proficient problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to adapt to changing environments
  • Willingness to work occasional after-hours as needed for implementation and troubleshooting support
  • Exceptional skill in communication, collaboration, task organization, time management, and time efficiency
  • Ability to occasionally travel with no limitations with driving or flying
  • Position is subject to clean a background check

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer information systems, computer science or a related field is required.
  • CCNA/JNCIS/Network+ or similar certification required
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in network design and administration role
  • Hands-on IP routing and Ethernet switching experience with Cisco, Arista, or Juniper equipment
  • Optical transport experience with Ribbon, Ciena, or Fujitsu is a plus
  • OLT experience with Calix or Adtran is a plus
  • Comprehensive understanding of Ethernet switching technologies including Link Aggregation, VLANs, xSTP, etc
  • Strong understanding of network protocols including BGP, OSPF, and ISIS
  • Strong understanding of ISP services including DHCP, DNS, PPPOE, CGN, and RADIUS
  • Basic understanding of IPv6 and dual-stack environments
