Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician will perform assigned tasks, within their scope, necessary for the operation of the Pharmacy.

QUALIFICATIONS

License /Certification
Required: Current California Pharmacy Technician or Intern Pharmacist registration

Education
Preferred: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience
Required: Six months previous relevant pharmacy tech experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledge as well as demonstrated competency of IV compounding using aseptic technique.
 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential

Knowledge and training in sterile technique, drug incompatibilities and stabilities, math computations, weights, volumes, concentrations, dilutions, Responsible for accurately and aseptically preparing, labeling, and compounding total parenteral nutrition, piggybacks, large volume intravenous mixtures, epidural preparations, and other medications.

Responsible for accurately and aseptically preparing and labeling unit dose medication for neonatal and pediatric patients.

Thoroughly cleans, decontaminates, calibrates, and documents all clean room equipment as per established procedures and policies.

Has knowledge and training in and is responsible for accurate and aseptic preparation of cytotoxic preparations.

Assists pharmacist in providing effective, appropriate, and safe pharmacy services. Recognizes situations that exceed technician authority (e.g. drug information, bypassing pharmacist checks) and refers to pharmacist for timely resolution. Always obtains pharmacist verification prior to distributing medications to areas.

Answers telephone in a courteous, professional manner. Provides timely follow up on requests.

Accurately fills medication orders per pharmacist request, or following arranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.

Assists in stock control. Assures orders received for wholesaler for outside sources have recognized barcodes. Able to send an emergency order to wholesaler. Communicates low stock items to buyers. Able to prepare orders for offsite areas. Able to prepare returns to wholesaler.

Assists with inventory stocking, removing expired medication, rotating stock, basement orders, assuring correct medication storage requirements are met, and monitoring usage.

Accurately repackages medications utilizing labeling and policy standards. Log sheets are consistently and accurate and complete.

Accurately fills standard medication trays and boxes and enters accurate expiration dates, if applicable to assigned work site.

Accurately loads and refills automated drug delivery cabinets (i.e. Pyxis MedStations)Pyxis Medstations. Utilizes scanning technology, if applicable to assigned work site. Promptly reports any defective equipment to IT. Assures SALAD medications are not close proximity.

Accurately inputs patient charges and credits into billing systems as instructed, if applicable to assigned work site.

Delivers or assures delivery of medications to a nursing station in a timely and courteous manner.

Performs rounds as assigned to check for unused or discontinued medications. Empties return bins as assigned.

Consistently documents refrigerator temps as part of established policy and procedures.

Maintains and updates logs, crash cart list and communication are required, if applicable to assigned work site.

Maintains records, generates reports, lists, labels as required.

Receives medication orders and scans medications into inventory, if applicable to assigned work site. Assures stock is rotated when adding to stock.

Inspects medication storage areas according to procedures. Consistently documents completion of assigned expiration area.

Self-reports on medication error.

Participates in Pharmacy staff meetings, training, educational and orientation programs.

Addendum (essential for specific dept)

QUALITY AND SAFETY TECHNICIAN ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR:

Provides support of medication related regulatory, quality, and safety work. Responsible for meeting organization and technology facilitation, agenda packets, minutes, policy tech approval process, off-cycle emergency approvals and P&T action follow up - including newsletter. Responsible for report creation and dashboard maintenance for ADE committee. Responsible for report generation for ID related reporting elements and dashboard maintenance. Performs medication room monthly inspection reporting management and follow up. Performs Pyxis optimization for SALAD drugs. Provides audit support for regulatory compliance related follow up. Responsible for smart pump meeting organization and technology facilitation, agenda packets, and minutes.


PHARMACY C2 SAFE ASSIST ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR:

Reconciles and files controlled medication records per established procedures. Accurately loads and refills controlled medications in Pyxis Medstations. Assures ample stock is located in C2 Safe and Medstations. Rotates medications as appropriate to minimize expirations. Accurately repackages controlled medications utilizing labeling and packaging policy standards. Processes returned waste of controlled medications through an established reconciliation process. Assures compliance with quality assurance processes (i.e. weekly narcotic inventory, pyxis vs C2 compare reports, destruction of patient's own medications after 90 days etc). Coordinates the return of expired controlled medications to the reverse distributor. Coordinates the return of incorrect or damaged items.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area.

Pay Range

$25.28 -$37.92
