Position Description
As a champion of Rocketship's mission, culture and values, the Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) partners with managers to promote  a culture of high performance, retention, and inclusion.  Reporting to the Director, HRBP, the service-oriented HRBP represents the strategic interests of the regions and schools they serve while ensuring fair and equitable support for every employee.

The following are essential functions related to the role:

School and Regional Support
  • Effective and timely support of School and Regional Leaders 
  • Provide advice and counsel to managers regarding, performance management, employment practices, policies and employment laws
  • Strategic and respected point of contact for leaders on all HR issues including leaves, disciplinary actions, benefits, compensation, compliance, and employee development
  • Identify managerial skill development needs and deliver individual and small-group trainings to enhance managerial competence and understanding of organizational policies and procedures
  • Coach managers to a more productive engagement with disagreement
  • Lead monthly meetings with school leaders discussing variety of Talent related topics
  • Recommend process/customer service improvements, innovative solutions, and/or policy changes to enhance HR service delivery and effectiveness
  • Participate in developing annual department goals/objectives, and assist in evaluation of reports, decisions, and results of department in relation to established goals

  • Employee Relations Resolution
  • Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues 
  • Conduct effective, thorough and objective employee misconduct investigations and determine necessary level of progressive discipline
  • Manage the termination processes under the guidance of the Director, HRBPs
  • Mediate entrenched conflicts to allow relationships to improve and work to move forward
  • Ensure HR policies including progressive discipline and performance management policies are applied equitably across all staff

  • Employment Law and HR Compliance
  • Act as primary regional resource for staff and managers on all internal policies and direct them to appropriate resources
  • Ensure managerial compliance and understanding of all applicable regional labor laws and internal policies, procedures, and practices
  • Ensure fair and equitable treatment in pay, performance management, benefits, etc. for all employees
  • Maintain confidentiality of information. Take steps to ensure documents, files and information are kept secure and employee-related information is not shared outside of a “business need” context
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation and updates and communicates HR policies accordingly
  • Work closely with the Talent Operations team to ensure the organization complies with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to employees

  • Collaboration and Relationship Building
  • Build strong relationships within the Talent team, Managers, and cross-functionally across schools/departments in order to communicate and align HR strategy to meet business needs
  • Support other Talent teams with, the hiring, promotion, transfer processes ,including approving offer letters 
  • Keep a pulse on all employees to ensure we are delivering excellence in the employee experience

  • Organizational Development
  • Partner with Talent team to meet developmental and training needs of the business and create a development roadmap 
  • Drive change in a complex environment, including communicating and coaching for change
  • Work with leadership to develop appropriate organizational structures
  • Use survey, retention, and exit interview data to propose and inform change
  • Develop retention and engagement strategies for regions and schools
  • Partner with internal communications to support communication efforts

  • Analytics and Project Leadership
  • Leverage all systems, tools, and resources to support completion of HR projects
  • Initiate, manage, or participate in special projects in support of organizational initiatives, including all HR-related events
  • Assist in training new users on HR programs and systems
  • Help establish and maintain HR metrics
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Required and Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required. Field of study in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Labor Relations, Business, or related preferred.
  • 5 years minimum experience in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Labor Relations, Business, or related field required
  • 1 minimum HR Business Partner or Generalist experience required
  • SHRM-CP/PHR or SHRM-SCP/SPHR preferred

  • Demonstration employee relations experience and strong working knowledge of HR functions, including but not limited to employment law (familiarity with California preferred), performance management, and compensation/pay practices, performance measures, change management, and labor relations 
  • Results-oriented problem solver with proven ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills, including verbal and written communication skills, presentation skills, and listening and probing for understanding and tailoring communications to varied audiences
  • Presence and self-awareness to serve as a cultural leader for a diverse staff, setting the tone for an inclusive, and welcoming workplace 

  • Work Location
  • This role can be primarily based out of the Bay Area (i.e.,  Walnut Creek, San Jose, Redwood City, Antioch, Concord, CA ). 
  • The role requires your own independent transportation to and from offices.
  • Occasional travel (up to 30%) may be required.
