Work Arrangement

This role is based remotely but if you live within a 50-mile radius of Mountain View, California or Warren, Michigan, you are expected to report to that location three times a week, at minimum.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Director of Communications to lead efforts with a primary focus on workplace change management, company-wide initiatives, HR communications, and inclusion strategies. This role is essential to supporting our employees through transformative changes by building understanding and trust around GM’s strategic priorities, fostering an inclusive culture, and ensuring that communications are clear, cohesive, and impactful. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader who can work cross-functionally and at scale to create and implement communication strategies that address employee concerns, celebrate milestones, and drive engagement. This person works effectively with both executives and colleagues, and consistently delivers high-quality results under tight deadlines. The work will promote workplace values and culture and motivate employees to engage in GM’s transformation.

What You’ll Do

  • Change Management Communication: Lead communications around organizational change, guiding employees through transformation by developing consistent and transparent messaging, supporting smooth transitions, and fostering a resilient company culture. 

  • Strategic Initiative Alignment: Work closely with leadership to align communications with corporate strategy, clearly articulating goals, values, and performance metrics. 

  • HR & Internal Communications: Develop and oversee communications on HR-related matters, including employee policies, benefit changes, learning and development opportunities, and workforce planning. Ensure diverse perspectives and voices are included in the communication strategy and manage awareness on how inclusion impact our business.  

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Develop 360 executive communications plans that resonate with leadership and employees alike. Engage and inform internal stakeholders (executives, managers, employees) through consistent, relevant messaging across appropriate channels (e.g., town halls, digital platforms). 

  • Crisis Communication: Manage communication in times of crisis or uncertainty, developing strategies to support employees and uphold company reputation. 

  • Content Development: Create content and campaigns that highlight the company's mission, employee stories, and strategic initiatives related to culture and workplace environment. 

  • Team Leadership: Lead a team of communications professionals, mentoring team members and fostering a collaborative environment that promotes creativity and strategic thinking.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Business, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred). 

  • 10+ years of experience in corporate communications, including expertise in change management, internal communications, and HR communications. 

  • Demonstrated success in leading change management and communication strategies during periods of transformation, ideally within large or complex organizations. 

  • Strong storytelling, writing and editing abilities, with a knack for creating engaging and clear messages that resonate with diverse audiences. 

  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple, high-impact initiatives simultaneously. 

  • Outstanding interpersonal and influencing skills, with experience working alongside senior leaders and cross-functional partners. 

  • A company vehicle will be provided for this role with successful completion of a Motor Vehicle Report review.

Compensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of the California Bay Area.

  • The salary range for this role is $184,300 to $282,400. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
