Summary of Job Duties:
The Medical Laboratory Scientist I - Hematology performs laboratory tests and analyses in the Hematology department to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This entry-level position is responsible for conducting routine and complex hematology tests, preparing specimens, operating laboratory equipment, and ensuring the accuracy and quality of test results. The role requires a strong understanding of hematology principles, attention to detail, and the ability to follow established protocols and procedures.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences or Bachelor of Science in related discipline
- Eligible for ASCP Certification or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
- ASCP or equivalent certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT), or discipline specific certification (C, H)
- Previous Hematology Lab experience

- Provide direct patient care by supplying the patient with appropriate blood components
- Wash red blood cells and platelets
- Perform platelet crossmatching and platelet antibody identification
- Perform daily reagent QC and equipment preventive maintenance
- Issue blood and blood components to the floors
- Understand the importance of massive trauma and to issue blood and blood components as set forth in the Massive Transfusion Protocol
- Communicate effectively with the blood bank customers including physicians, nurses, and other UAMS staff members
- Receive samples and to ensure all samples are appropriately labeled and collected properly for the Blood Bank
- Assist in training of new staff and students
- Maintain competency and train on all revised and new policy/procedures in a timely manner
- Report any deviation from standard operating procedures to the supervisor in a timely manner
- Perform daily reagent QC and equipment preventive maintenance with 100% accuracy. Assist with performance of quarterly, semi-annual, and annual quality control
