The Cancer Center Nurse Clinician, in collaboration with the medical oncologist, collaborating APN and the entire healthcare team, oversees and supports the oncology patient and their significant other(s). This care is begun during initial consultation and continues throughout the treatment continuum.

Responsibilities:

 

A day in the life of the Cancer Center Nurse Clinician at Hackensack Meridian Health may include:

 

  • Provides oncology clinical expertise and utilizes evidence-based research to achieve positive outcomes for the oncology patient, their families and significant others.
  • Applies evidence-based practice to make clinical decisions and establish standards of clinical specialty.
  • Provides patient care, applying oncology clinical skills and critical thinking to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Maintains a communication system which ensures comprehensive and timely transmission of information to physicians, nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary team.
  • During all initial assessments and all phone triage, identifies problems and helps develop evidence-based guidelines/solutions to meet desired measurable outcomes and documents all care/findings as per policy.
  • Participates in the collaboration with physicians, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary team in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for selected patients and their families.
  • Identifies educational needs of the oncology patient, their families and significant others, and collaborates with other multidisciplinary team members to educate and develop programs and teaching materials.
  • Participates/coordinates and facilitates in formal or informal educational programs which include mentoring.
  • Provides individualized and culturally appropriate health promotion and oncology care based on age, learning theory, epidemiological principles and developmental levels, learning needs, readiness and the ability to learn.
  • Supports immediate revision of the plan of care as per the physician and collaborating APN and initiates immediate teaching/education with the oncology patient and their significant other(s) to support/meet desired outcomes and documents appropriately.
  • Monitors documentation in the medical record to ensure patient outcomes are achieved and maintained based on established standards of care.
  • Serves as a clinical resource person to nursing staff, patients/families, and other multidisciplinary team members across the continuum to evaluate complex patients and identify appropriate desired outcomes and interventions.
  • Participates in the development of evidence-based guidelines/protocols that are utilized in planning patient care and monitoring achievement of patient outcomes.
  • Participates in continuous process improvement efforts to improve patient outcomes, assures appropriate utilization of resources and increases patient satisfaction.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited program in nursing
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required, Master's degree preferred
  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License required
  • Minimum of 2 or more years of experience as a registered nurse
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms
  •  2 years of experience working in an oncology setting preferred
  • Certification in area of specialty preferred
