Summary of Position

The ASTM Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) was established in 2018 to accelerate Industry adoption of Additive Manufacturing through fast-tracking Standardization. The AM CoE has now grown significantly with a wide range of technically challenging funded programs, a full suite of advanced training offerings, a large-scale Consortium for Materials Data and Standardization, advisory services, and a number of other programs to enable industrialization of AM technologies. AM CoE is not part of the Global Advanced Manufacturing Division (AMD.

We are seeking an experienced advanced manufacturing professional to serve as a Director, Business Development and Strategic Relations within the AMD to help us deliver existing activities and supporting future growth by driving business development, securing strategic partnerships, and leading client engagement efforts This role is primarily focused on business development, sales and marketing, strategic partnership building, and customer relationship management (CRM),  while also contributing to technical activities and consortium growth.


Top-level activities can include (not exhaustive):

1) Identify and lead key opportunities for funded activities:

  1. Lead the bid management process (technical and commercial),
  2. Lead proposal generation, supported by the Engineering team, ensuring alignment with ASTM’s strategic growth objectives. 
  3. Manage all commercial aspects of funded activities, including contract negotiations
  4. Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with new and existing clients, ensuring long-term partnerships. 

2) Develop new collaborations & support Business Development, 

  1.  Present at technical workshops, conferences, and industry events to represent ASTM’s AM leadership and engage with prospective partners.
  2.  Lead the development of strategic collaborations with OEMs, suppliers, and research institutions to expand ASTM’s role in the AM sector. 
  3. Drive revenue growth through consortium memberships, certification programs, and consulting services by creating long-term value for clients. 

3) Develop and Execute Revenue-Driven Strategies

  1. Develop and execute strategies to meet revenue targets, working closely with the Engineering technical team
  2. Manage the sales pipeline by identifying new opportunities, tracking leads, and closing high-value deals.

4) Global Outreach and Industry Engagement

  1. Develop an outreach strategy to engage with industry, academia and government agencies globally.
  2. Actively participate in consortiums, collaborative projects, and initiatives that drive innovation and standardization in AM technologies. 
  3. Ensure ASTM remains at the forefront of AM standards development and certification leadership by influencing key industry stakeholders. 
  4. Support ongoing technical activities Collaborate with AM CoE technical engineering team to support ongoing projects, while ensuring business development goals are integrated into technical solutions. 
  5. Contribute to successful execution of proposal development, ensuring technical requirements are met. 
  6. Provide high-level technical consulting support to clients when necessary, ensuring alignment between ASTM’s standards and the commercial needs of clients. 

The role requires 20-40% travel depending on the needs.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in leading successful technical proposal funding applications and building appropriate consortium teams
  • Graduate degree in Engineering
  • Business development, sales and marketing expertise and experience
  • 7+ years or more of technical experience in relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in Advanced Manufacturing technologies
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Project management experience
  • Willing to learn and adapt with emerging technologies
  • Proven ability to work in a team with good interpersonal skills
  • Self-starter with exceptional attention to detail 
  • Technically motivated to solve problems and have the creativity to initiate new ideas
  • Can-do attitude and independent decision-making abilities
  • Passion for innovation, technology, and enterprise development


Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • 10+ years or more of technical experience in Additive Manufacturing or relevant discipline
  • Master’s degree in engineering (or PhD).
  • Knowledge of topics such as (ideally based on Additive Manufacturing experience):
    • Materials Allowable Generation 
    • Quality Management for Manufacturing
    • Certification & Qualification Methods, and knowledge of regulations & requirements
  • Demonstrate experience of leading & managing technical/commercial projects.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively with all levels of management and translate them into meaningful project outcomes.
  • Experience in standards development and participation in technical committees.
