Job description

Our communities and industries are at the heart of everything we do.

Pinion is a Top 70 accounting and consulting firm that promotes a team approach to serving clients. We are looking to add a tax expert to the National Tax Solutions (NTS) team, our National Tax Office. We seek an aspiring leader, ready to build on their tax and business foundation as they move toward deeper technical areas of client service. It’s interesting work and every day is different. Your exposure to many different problems and proposed solutions will help you become a better solutions provider, and ultimately an even better consultant.

Our values are a guidepost for how we relate to the people we work with - collaborative, engaged and joy-filled. We are looking for tax professionals to join our team who embrace our values of:

  • Collaboration. Share experiences, create growth, and innovate together
  • Exploration. Be tenacious and curious, discover possibilities and create solutions
  • Initiative. Act. Move with intention and agility, always eager to capitalize on opportunities and lead change

What you’ll be doing:

If you’re a tax-focused JD or CPA, ready to experience a different way of serving clients, look no further. In this tax research and consulting role, you’ll serve as a creative thinker who isn’t afraid to think outside the box, suggesting new solutions, turning a question into a project and asking “What if…?” You’ll help clients from a variety of industries strategically grow their business as you guide them through entity selection and reorganization, buying and selling businesses, and modeling transactions. This role will provide you with an opportunity to challenge the status quo and make a real difference as you effectively assess, understand, and communicate risk.

Our best tax consultants...

  • Are experts in federal income tax law and enjoy creative problem-solving
  • Look beyond the technical details to recognize and help others see the big picture
  • Dig into the root issue, often turning it into an opportunity for greater client service

What you’ll need for this position:

  • JD, Master's in Tax, or CPA required
  • 2+ years of experience with tax research and consulting
  • Experience with tax modeling
  • Ability to read and understand financial statements and tax returns
  • Technical depth in at least one of the following areas, with interest to learn the others:
    • General to complex partnership issues, such as 754 elections, disguised sales, mergers and divisions, special allocations, debt, basis, and related tax reporting requirements
    • General to complex S corporation issues, such as eligibility requirements, ineligible shareholders, trust ownership, distributions, basis, and related tax reporting requirements
    • Corporate reorganizations, mergers, and acquisitions, and related tax reporting requirements
    • Asset sales and transfers
    • State and local income tax
    • Executive compensation and benefits
    • Accounting methods
    • Representing clients in tax controversy matters before the IRS and state taxing authorities
  • Curiosity to go beyond the textbook, asking hard questions and using technical skills to provide solutions to client problems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex financial and tax information to those within the firm as well as to clients and their advisors
  • Ability to keep up with tax trends, IRS guidance, legislation, etc. and communicating updates with the firm
  • Willingness to travel occasionally overnight up to 10% annually

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Transaction modeling and cash flow planning
  • Desire and ability to review and consult on legal documents for transactions to make sure the ideas are properly implemented

What’s in it for you:

  • Remote, hybrid, and in-office work environment options
  • A people-centered culture, with fun included among our core firm values
  • A robust training and development program designed to help you discover your distinct abilities and use them to grow yourself and the firm
  • More freedom to explore your areas of interest
  • A fast track to leadership and influence for those who pursue it
