Summary
Ballast Investments is seeking a self-driven, and highly motivated, Compliance Accountant to join our rapidly growing team. The ideal candidate is someone who is looking to level up in their career, and would take ownership in reviewing and directing, opposed to booking the financial activity. The Compliance Accountant will be responsible for the financial oversight of the general ledger activity, related to the real estate assets under management, as well as working with internal and external partners to ensure our books are accurate. It is critical that this individual has a strong understanding of GAAP, to ensure that they are able to assist with catching inconsistencies and training the individuals who recorded them.
The Company is a vertically integrated owner-operator of multifamily, student housing, and single family rental assets in the greater Western United States. Primary Responsibilities
- Assist with monitoring and managing our daily Unrecorded Cash tracker
- Supervise the overseas team to ensure all bank transactions and bank reconciliations are posted in a timely manner, whilst providing guidance and training
- Read, review, and gain an understanding of any new loan agreements, and other legal documents, to identify the deliverables needed for all new deals in our portfolio
- Review and analyze financial statements, and schedule preparation, on a GAAP basis for all entities to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Reconcile, investigate, and resolve accounting transaction issues, related to financial statements
- Maintain a thorough understanding of the general ledger structure, with an emphasis on fund accounting
- Compose monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting packages to be submitted to our lenders and investors to ensure we meet our deliverables and deadlines
- Assist with Facilitating interim/annual audits with external auditors, as well as our quarterly REIT compliance requests
- Support in reviewing year-end tax preparation and audit schedule preparation for assigned portfolios
- Assist with Ad hoc requests received from External partners, regarding our financial statements
- Create and design new systems, workbooks, or controls that help resolve common issues and strengthen processes
- Other duties as assigned by management
Minimum Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s, or masters, degree in accounting required
- 3 years or more of accounting work experience required
- Strong knowledge of GAAP rules and regulations required
- Proficient Excel skills required (filters, sorting, pivot tables, V lookup, etc.)
- Real estate and/or property management experience a plus
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of products
- Yardi experience preferred

- Proven time management skills, with the ability to pivot if pressing items arise
