THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Director of Taxation, this individual will be responsible for overseeing U.S. tax areas in relation to our investor reporting and property investments to ensure delivery of proper tax planning and reporting that is in compliance with the tax legislations in the applicable jurisdictions.  This individual will also support property acquisition/disposition transactions from a tax perspective, and research on U.S. federal & state taxation and provide recommendations on transaction structure to minimize current and future taxes to the benefit of investors.  This position provides a unique opportunity for the right individual to lead the buildout of our U.S. tax area.  In addition to meeting compliance requirements, we are looking for someone who can transform our U.S. tax activities to be more proactive and value-add focused.  This role also provides an excellent opportunity for further developing skill set and in-depth experience in a broad range of U.S. tax areas.
 

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage U.S. federal and state partnership tax compliance work process
  • Responsible for important tax compliance tasks including engagement work planning, managing information gathering & submissions, monitoring/tracking of work progress & due dates, reviewing of deliverables & notices/assessments, and management of external professional firms
  • Manage U.S. state tax and sales tax matters
  • Work in close liaison with our Investor Reporting and Property Accounting teams and various external professional firms on day-to-day U.S. tax matters, and build effective working relationships
  • Maintain proactive communication with other internal teams on new and important transactions/events that are relevant to investor reporting and property investments, participate in the planning/designing of such transactions/events to the extent it is relevant for tax purposes, and identify and keep track of issues with potential tax implications and ensure they get resolved and/or reflected in tax filings properly
  • Research and stay up to date on new and important developments in relevant tax legislations
  • Handle high-impact tasks such as ad hoc tax research, tax questions from investors and properties, transaction reviews, and tax audits/reviews/information requests from tax authorities
  • Maintain necessary tax related documentation

 CANDIDATE PROFILE

  • 6+ years of progressive U.S. tax experience, with strong practical experience in U.S. partnership tax filings
  • CPA designation is preferred
  • Solid tax research skills and ability to identify tax issues and see them through to resolution
  • Detail oriented with excellent organization and communication skills, and ability to effectively manage work under tight timelines and changing priorities
  • Strong team leadership skills and ability to supervise and train junior team members
  • An open-minded inter-departmental collaborator
  • Strong practical experience in working with external parties including professional firms and tax authorities
  • Aptitude to leverage technology to gain efficiencies and improve processes
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel
