Job description

About 1Password:
We all have important information we need to manage, and protecting it should be easy. Over 150,000 businesses and millions of people log in to 1Password to unlock smart, simple access to everything they care about. Our vision is to create a safer, simpler digital future for everyone, and our culture values simplicity, honesty and a human-centric approach to solving problems. Come help us unlock peace of mind so everyone can stay safer online.

We are continuing to grow our leadership team, and currently are hiring for Engineering Managers for three of our Product Engineering teams, Password Manager and Extended Access Management(XAM).

• As Engineering Manager for our Identity, People and Accounts (Password Manager) team, you will lead and empower one of our most prominent development teams. Reporting to the Head of Password Manager Development, you will help craft our vision and make it a reality through creative engineering and identifying required solutions to hard problems.

• As Engineering Manager of our Application Insights (XAM) team you’ll build a brand new product that tackles the ShadowIT problem space. You will have the opportunity to define the course of the product and the underlying tech. This team works across the stack from the data layer to the client app UI. If operating in a greenfield environment and building productive security products excites you, this is the team for you.

• As Engineering Manager of our Authentication Enablement (XAM) team you’ll support one of the most critical functions at 1Password while realizing the vision to deliver the infrastructure of a seamless login experience for our customers: both in the consumer and business space. Technically, the team focuses on back-end functionality with exciting opportunities to enhance 1Password's "Authentication Platform." The success of this team is heavily dependent on close collaboration across technical teams, product pillars and cross-functional departments.

Regardless of which team you land on, you will be responsible for tactical execution by the team, helping to coordinate activities such as cycle planning, design reviews, and project planning. You will also be responsible for hiring and coaching world-class talent for your team.

An ever-increasing number of individuals, families, and businesses are using 1Password every day, and 1Password needs to scale accordingly. Come help us make it easier than ever for those people to get started!

This is a remote opportunity within the US and Canada.

What we're looking for:
  • At least 3 years experience in a role where you were responsible for managing a team of software engineers and everything that comes with it.
  • You have significant hands-on development experience (preferably in the app space) and have engineered your way out of many complex, unscoped problems. Having lived the life of a senior developer before, you leverage your own experience to coach and train up the developers on your team.
  • You have successfully coordinated and delivered large scale projects before that touched multiple areas of the business, product, or underlying architecture.
  • The ability to create and maintain a positive, healthy team environment in which everyone is supported, encouraged, and meaningfully challenged to do great work. You motivate and inspire others. After meeting with you, people get back to their job with more energy. You are a force of positivity and lift people up when they need it.
  • You enjoy having the freedom and responsibility to make final decisions on most everything for your team. Handling tough problems gives you energy and you can make the hard decisions even when there isn’t much information to go on.
  • You are someone who is ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work themselves on technical challenges.
  • You are capable of driving the delivery of projects, and creating roadmaps for future work.
  • Effective in cross-functional communication and building strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Bonus for:
  • Experience managing remote and distributed teams.
  • User experience/design background
  • XAM
  • Experience building and scaling products from scratch
  • Experience in the SaaS B2B space

  • What you can expect:
  • Manage engineers and develop engineering leads. Foster an environment of innovation, execution, and collaboration.
  • Work to scope and plan key deliverables for projects and initiatives with the team.
  • Drive execution with an emphasis on iterations and deliverables, quality, velocity, and communication.
  • Provide technical leadership to developers both in your team and across the engineering organization.
  • Grow a team of strong engineers to create an inclusive workplace.
  • Continue scaling a highly specialized engineering team by working with a team of Engineering Managers to continuously refine hiring, onboarding, and development processes.
  • Even if you don't tick all these boxes, we want to hear from you. We understand that everyone's experiences are unique.

The most important thing you can bring to this job is the drive to dive in, get the work done, and fix root causes instead of treating symptoms. We believe in continuous learning and support professional development on the job with a budget to back it up. If you bring a desire to do the right thing for our customers, a sense of ownership over the product you work on, and a focus on shipping quality code, we want to hear from you.
