Job description

Stand Together is a philanthropic community that helps America’s boldest changemakers tackle the root causes of our country’s biggest problems, from education to the economy, broken communities, and toxic division, among dozens of other pressing issues. We provide our partners with access to resources including funding, thought leadership, a network of peers, and a playbook for applying proven principles to transform lives and society.

The growing Stand Together Music, Sports, and Entertainment team (STMSE) is looking for a Managing Director to lead and expand our impact across the most leveraged leagues and athletes in sports, partnering on the issues on which we focus, including Education, Free Speech, Criminal Justice, and Healthcare.  We seek to create deeper engagement on these important social issues beyond the transactional.

As Managing Director, you will lead the Sports vertical’s strategy and daily operations.  This will include developing growth plans to identify and cultivate new partnership opportunities and serving as a strategic leader across our existing partnerships with sports leagues and athletes. You will develop and empower your team to elevate their contributions by creating bold strategies and executing campaigns and partnerships that deliver clear and measurable results.  Collaborating across Stand Together teams to build a deep understanding of our strategies, you will work closely with internal leaders and partners including players, teams, and owners within professional sports leagues (NFL, NBA, PGA, MLB, and UFC), overseeing partnership strategy, and guiding your team to excel as world-class partnership directors.

To be successful, you will have a proven track record of cultivating long-term strategic partnerships and launching activations that have driven measurable progress within the sports industry. Finally, you will have experience leading highly successful teams through direct supervision and influence-based leadership.

Your Responsibilities Include
  • Develop impactful partnership strategies with your team that focus on long-term mutual benefit and advance STMSE’s vision and partnership goals, including working with partners and internal teams to develop shared vision, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Lead the successful cultivation and execution of long-term partnerships, continually aligning internal and external stakeholders to shared vision and objectives.
  • Hold teams accountable for achieving high performance standards and delivering results in alignment with organizational strategic goals.
  • Streamline processes to improve partnership relationship strategies, iterate objectives in response to STMSE overall priorities and goals.
  • Develop the team of sports partnership directors, and hire additional talent, to become world-class partnership builders.
  • Monitor industry trends for growth opportunities to scale the reach of STMSE programs.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to other parts of the Stand Together community for industry partners and potential opportunities.

  • What You Bring
  • 10+ years’ experience in partnership within the sports industry.
  • 5+ years’ experience as supervisor with a track record of helping your direct reports grow professionally.
  • Deep growth mindset built on humility and openness.  Successful candidates will prioritize learning how to apply their industry knowledge within the context of our management philosophy to drive transformational results.
  • Self-motivated yet coachable attitude with a desire to contribute and grow personally.
  • Proficiency in clear, succinct, and timely communication, with the ability to proactively seek and share knowledge and insights across teams and convey complex ideas with clarity.
  • Broad knowledge of industry norms and standards within the various professional sports leagues.
  • Must have strong strategic thinking and planning skills and a proven track record of operationalizing strategy.
  • Enthusiasm to contribute to Stand Together'svision and principled approach to solving problems.
  • A commitment to stewarding our culture, which champions values including transformation and innovation, entrepreneurialism, humility, and respect.
  • A willingness to travel as needed, sometimes on short notice, depending on your location and the needs of the business.

  • What We Offer
  • Competitive benefits including:  6% 401(k) match with immediate vest, flexible time off policy, health and dental plan options, and free access to health and wellness services through Peloton and Talkspace
  • A meaningful career and a passionate community of over 1,300 employees dedicated to improving the lives of others
  • Opportunities for professional development and mentorship based on the value you create, not the amount of time you’ve been here
  • Competitive salaries and bonuses. Our salary and bonus strategies are aligned to the value you create, not a standardized bell curve.
