Purpose of the Position:

 

The Vice President of People Operations reports to the Chief People Officer and is a key member of the People & Culture executive team. This highly visible role helps foster a high-performance culture through dynamic, consistent and objective strategic leadership and decision-making. The ideal candidate has a progressive view of people operations strategy that drives team member attraction, engagement and retention.

 

UMA is a nonprofit healthcare educational institution with a national presence. Headquartered in Tampa, Florida and founded in 1994, UMA offers content-rich, interactive online programs as well as hands-on training at our Clearwater, Florida campus. 

  • Anticipated salary of $200,000-225,000, based on experience and qualifications

What You’ll Do:

  1. Strategic HR Leadership: Lead and optimize the People Operations function, including employee relations, policy administration, performance management, investigations, onboarding and off-boarding, engagement and organizational culture in a multi-state and multi-entity environment. Lead and develop a team of People Operations professionals to effectively support a growing employee population through the development, deployment, and maintenance of consistent processes and procedures.
  2. Employee Engagement and Development: Drive initiatives to enhance employee engagement, professional development, and retention, ensuring a motivated and skilled workforce.
  3. Data-Driven Decision Making: Utilize data and analytics to inform People Operations strategies and decisions, continuously improving processes and outcomes through evidence-based practices. Ensure team ratios effectively support workforce population.
  4. Change Management: Collaborate with senior leadership to drive organizational change initiatives, including workforce planning, leadership development, performance management, goals development and employee engagement strategies that align with UMAE’s long-term vision
  5. Budget Management: Oversee People Operations departmental expenses and investments to ensure appropriate allocation of people and technology resources.
  6. Career Mobility: Support our interest in empowering our team members to grow in place, develop skills and promote from within.
  7. Cross-Functional Partnership: Anticipate and address themes across the department (including other People & Culture functions, such as Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards and Learning & Development) and across the organization that impact team member satisfaction and departmental success. Support departments in headcount management that ladders to organizational budget.
  8. Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure compliance with all relevant labor laws and regulations and manage HR-related risks to protect the organization and its employees.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Manages a single job family for the organization for a line of business which typically includes at least one department/team that has a material impact on business results
  • Establishes and implements strategies that have short- to mid-term impact on business results (1–2 years or less)
  • Problems faced are frequently complex and require broad-based solutions that impact multiple areas of the organization
  • Requires ability to negotiate and compromise, and ability to communicate and influence senior executive leadership

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field
  • 15+ years of progressive HR leadership experience, preferably in a multi-state and remote or hybrid environment
  • Experience working with legal counsel and managing risk and compliance issues
  • Leadership skills, strategic thinking, strong understanding of HR systems, data analytics, and compliance with labor laws and regulations
  • Ability to professionally communicate fluently in verbal and written English
  • Ability to support a diverse and inclusive work environment
  • Computer literacy/basic computer skills to effectively navigate and utilize the technology required for the role

Preferred Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or MBA in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field
  • Current HR certification (e.g., SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP, PHR/SPHR)
  • Experience with M&A, particularly on the acquisition side; to include employee integration, alignment of core values, and harmonization of policies and procedures
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other business tools such as Microsoft Teams

Compliance: 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and carefully follows all applicable federal and state laws and rules, compliance requirements and regulations including those prescribed by the U.S. Department of Education, accrediting agencies, state regulations and, and internal policies and procedures
  • Effectively communicate compliance requirements to other staff as appropriate and quickly escalate any compliance concerns to the Compliance department

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • This is a full-time remote position
  • Home office setup, quiet place to work, and ability to hard wire into high-speed internet connection
  • May require setup of computer equipment; accommodation consideration available upon request
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, as needed
  • Up to 20% travel may be required
