The Opportunity:

The National Post is hiring a journalist focused on investigations and data for its Ottawa parliamentary bureau. The bureau covers federal politics for National Post and Postmedia, Canada's largest news chain, including the Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Ottawa Citizen and Montreal Gazette.

What you’ll do:

The ideal candidate will have a talent for developing creative and important political stories using a quantitative, data-driven approach. The candidate will be enterprising and motivated, with an expertise in gathering data and developing ways to report it that will engage and inform readers. Data-visualization skills and interest in utilizing artificial intelligence tools in reporting will be considered assets. The candidate will also collaborate with other reporters in a dynamic, team-oriented bureau.

Who you are:

  • 3+ years of newsroom experience, preferably with some background in federal, provincial or municipal politics.
  • Familiarity with the workings of the federal government.
  • An understanding of how to research stories using data mining, access to information, and other sources of information.
  • Knowledge of one or more programming languages (JavaScript, Python, etc.) will be an asset.
  • Interest in artificial intelligence tools and exploring potential opportunities to use them to enhance your reporting.
  • An understanding of the editorial values of the National Post.
