POSITION SUMMARY

Heritage Werks is seeking an On-Site Senior Historian to join their team! This role reports to the Managing Director of Content and is a full-time position based at a client’s office in Indianapolis, Indiana. This role requires travel to Heritage Werks in Atlanta, GA, as well as visits to the client’s facilities. The Senior Historian will serve as the go-to expert on the client's history, acting as the face of the archives both internally and externally. Key responsibilities include advising stakeholders on heritage storytelling, supporting research, and facilitating reference and access to historical resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain a deep understanding of the client’s history and communicate it authentically in presentations, written materials, and across internal and external channels.
  • Act as the primary representative of the client’s history, networking and outreach, storytelling, leading and delivering presentations, appearing in video communications, participating in planning meetings, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Heritage Werks team and the On-site Senior Archivist to manage client requests, ensuring responsive and comprehensive support.
  • Foster connections across the client’s organization, actively participating in meetings and events, and maintaining a visible presence across departments (marketing, communications, legal, HR, records management, etc.).
  • Proactively identify and support the information and imagery needs of stakeholders to ensure that they have access to relevant, up-to-date information from client’s history and archival resources
  • Manage, maintain and curate exhibits and displays at client locations including working with the Heritage Werks cross-functional team to schedule and manage projects and ensure appropriate resources are assigned and standards are maintained.
  • Collaborate with the Heritage Werks Account Director to promote the client’s history and archival resources through regular stakeholder outreach and periodic heritage storytelling strategy sessions.
  • Work with the On-Site Senior Archivist to conduct research, coordinating with Heritage Werks Historians and Researchers to produce deliverables and reports.
  • Manage research and reference requests related to interpreting, synthesizing, and conducting external research, as well as packaging findings for the client. Ensure all requests are addressed appropriately, working in collaboration with the On-Site Senior Archivist and the Research Request Team at Heritage Werks.
  • Assist the On-Site Archivist in archival collection and integration efforts by identifying and addressing storytelling gaps within the collection.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional Heritage Werks teams on client storytelling initiatives, including archival development, digital platform organization, communications strategy, exhibits, learning programs, and presentations.
  • Work closely with Heritage Werks Historians to uphold quality standards, ensuring resources and schedules align with client needs.
  • Collaborate with and support the client’s internal team to develop, refine, and communicate SOPs and policies effectively.
  • Follow all client policies, procedures, guidelines, and compliance requirements to ensure alignment with company standards and expectations.

Requirements

  • Trained historian with archival research experience and a strong understanding of American and global history (M.A. or Ph.D. preferred, but advanced undergraduate work combined with relevant experience will be considered).
  • Minimum of 4+ years in heritage communications, with experience as a curator, teacher, writer, or in other relevant roles; experience in corporate communications, PR, marketing, business development, or account management is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to build a robust network in new environments through in-person and virtual channels.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with a proven track record of effective communication at all organizational levels, including public speaking and engagement with C-Suite executives.
  • Availability of working on-site daily at the client location in Indianapolis.
  • Ability to handle physical archival materials, including moving archival boxes and artifacts.
  • Knowledgeable in medical, healthcare, pharmaceutical, and/or corporate history, with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Positive attitude combined with strong project management, creative problem-solving skills, and exceptional attention to detail while managing multiple responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated integrity and professionalism in handling sensitive information and materials.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, both internally and with clients.
  • Experience with digital content strategy, museum exhibits and/or image licensing a plus.
  • On-camera interview experience is a plus.
