About this role

BlackRock Japan has an opening for a VP role within the Legal function. You would be covering the following tasks along with the Legal team members.

Key Responsibilities:        

  • Provide legal advice based upon the Japan Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, the Act on Investment Trusts and Investment Corporations, the local industry association rules, and other related local laws and regulations;
  • Provide documentation work and legal advice on asset management business in relation to: (i) investment management agreements with local clients as well as offshore parties and other related documents; and (ii) local investment trust management funds (including ETFs);
  • Advise the business regarding real estate transactions under TMK and TK-GK scheme, and infrastructure and other private markets investments in Japan, working with external legal counsel;
  • Provide legal advice on filings concerning foreign investment trusts and corporations, and filings for specially permitted services for qualified institutional investors for offshore limited partnerships along with external legal counsel;
  • Provide documentation work and legal advice in relation to securities lending, TRIM (transition management business) and derivatives transactions;
  • Provide legal advice to internal functions such as Compliance, HR, ES (enterprise services) and Finance;
  • Provide legal advice on and documentation work in various other areas (including management of trademark and other intellectual properties, advising on large shareholding reporting, contracts with third party vendors, and inter-company agreements with overseas BlackRock affiliates);
  • Corporate secretarial work for BlackRock Japan and its affiliates;
  • Coordinate with overseas BlackRock colleagues for overseas regulations; and
  • Coordinate and develop relationships with external legal counsels at external law firms.

Key Requirements:

  • Japan qualified lawyer (‘Bengoshi’) with 3-5 years of experience at law firm preferred;
  • Experience in asset management and/or securities business-related legal work;
  • Capable of providing solution-oriented and practical legal advice to the business;
  • Agility to adapt to changing environment;
  • Enjoy working as a team member as well as independently;
  • Internal coordination skillset is required locally and globally as well as with external stakeholders;
  • Excellent organizational, negotiating and interpersonal skills;
  • Attention to details in relation to documentation and related tasks; and
  • Strategic thinker; ability to understand the business needs and partner with the business and control functions;
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills in both Japanese and English.
