Department Overview:
As part of the Brand Strategy and Marketing department, the Graphic Artist 3 is responsible for creating a variety of digital assets in service of OHSU's intersecting missions of healing, teaching and discovery.
They are responsible for maintaining a consistent expression of OHSU¿s visual identity as it applies to designing OHSU webpages and other digital products including, but not limited to, infographics, quizzes, tools, galleries, animations and other digital/interactive experiences. The designer will also be responsible for project research, concepting, design drafts, production and collaborating with OHSU user experience researchers, designers, web developers, content strategists and other internal partners as well as external vendors.
This role requires superb design and communication skills. The designer must have significant experience in high-volume production roles and be able to provide creative concepts and direction for high visibility external projects. The ability to quickly understand and consistently apply brand and digital design system guidelines is as essential as the technical skills necessary for success in this role.
Function/Duties of Position:
Design production
For assigned projects, designs and produces required materials. Specific tasks may include:
- Visually articulating OHSU brand and digital design system standards and content strategy.
- Developing standardized and accessible digital templates, tokens, patterns, styles and components.
- Composing and producing accessible and intuitive human-centered digital assets for OHSU external- and internal-facing web pages, social media, applications and other digital channels.
- Translate data from usability studies into concrete user interface design improvements.
Design project management
Collaborates with colleagues and internal partners, and manages creative workflow to ensure successful completion of design projects. Specific tasks may include:
- Leading creative intake and brainstorming sessions.
- Participating in meetings to solicit colleague or project requirements.
- Providing design concepts.
- Establishing appropriate expectations for project deadlines.
- Helping establish general guidelines for creative project execution.
- Ensuring updates of project in appropriate software.
- Coordinating interactions with web developers, user experience researchers and vendors.
- Ensuring appropriate archiving of completed project assets.
- Participating in efforts to continually improve creative team workflow and processes.
Brand and digital design system management
Supports consistent presentation of the OHSU visual identity. Specific tasks may include:
- Providing input for continual improvement and evolution of standards.
- Performing brand reviews for new digital applications.
- Working with colleagues, internal partners and external vendors to ensure consistent application of standards.
Required Qualifications:
- Six years of graphics arts production experience, two years of which included providing direct technical consultation and coordinating graphics design projects through to completion.
- A Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Graphics Arts may substitute for two years of experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a minimum of 18-quarter (12 semester) hours of graphic arts courses (transcripts must be submitted) may substitute for one year of experience.
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):
- A digital portfolio that demonstrates:
- Superb ability to translate content strategy into thoughtful digital experiences, with an emphasis on accessibility, functionality, interaction, usability, aesthetics and designing for the needs of diverse audiences.
- Experience developing accessible, component-based and responsive digital design systems.
- Exceptional proficiency in the most up-to-date versions of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
- Exceptional proficiency in Figma and a knowledge of web production workflows and best practices.
- Experience creating tools such as digital calculators, maps/wayfinding solutions, virtual tours and other interactive solutions.
- A sophisticated understanding of general design principles related to composition, color and typography.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a high throughput, multi-project team environment with a combination of high standards and strong vision tempered with flexibility and the ability to collaboratively work through revisions with patience and grace.
- Intermediate experience with project management software and concepts.
- Ability to productively collaborate with developers to bring a vision to fruition within system and time constraints.
- Ability to make clear and concise presentations in person and in online environments
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience enhancing and supporting brand standards and digital design system adherence in a large organization.
- Successful completion of project management, design workflow process management, or related certifications/trainings/workshops.
- Metrics and/or case studies demonstrating how your work supported and/or propelled strategic goals in a digital environment.
- Familiarity with the Drupal content management system and front-end languages including HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Proficiency in Adobe After Effects or other motion graphics software with a nuanced understanding of motion design principles.
- Experience using and/or setting up a drag-and-drop digital design tool such as Ceros. Experience guiding colleagues, such as content strategists or other designers in using a drag-and-drop digital design tool.
Additional Details:
This is a hybrid position. This role will be a combination of telework and on-campus as needed. Work schedule and location are generally within regular business hours, though the role may occasionally be required to staff on campus projects or attend meetings as assigned. Most on-campus workstations are shared.
