Job Description:

Title Resources is seeking an experienced underwriting counsel with real estate title underwriting experience.  The ideal candidate will also have a transactional background with a strong customer focus.   We are searching for a candidate with a strong work ethic, coupled with the ability to build deep relationships.
 
Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides underwriting support, answers and guidance to customers and internal departments on real estate closings and title insurance matters and determine the Company's willingness and ability to insure within the parameters of those transactions.
  • Establishes relationships with new customers and maintain and grow relationships with existing customers.
  • Assists independent and affiliated agent title and escrow officers on extraordinary issues, questions and closing problems.
  • Supports Company efforts with assigned state regulators, rating agencies and bureaus and licensing organizations.
  • Reviews and approves high liability orders within maximum approved limits.
  •  Provides independent and affiliated agent training.
  •  Advises and meets with independent and affiliated agents regarding escrow and title closing issues.
  • Supports independent and affiliated agents with marketing efforts directed at attorneys, lenders, realtors or buyer/seller clients.
  • Responds to claim problems, advises the title or escrow officers involved upon the request of the Claims Department.
  •  Participates as requested by management in marketing and education efforts, including developing and making presentations to large and small groups, writing Bulletins and articles for NATIC internal and external publications.
  •  Stays current and distributes to staff information regarding new laws and procedures.
  •  Involvement in title industry associations, state and local title organizations as well as related industry and state bar associations.
  • Travels on company business within state and without.
  • The ability to provide underwriting support in additional jurisdictions is a plus.
  • Responds to time sensitive requests from customers for guidance in closing real estate transactions and mitigate risk.
  • The position also requires some support and assistance with business development efforts.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Deputy Chief Underwriting Counsel and Chief Underwriting Counsel.


Qualifications:

  • A Juris Doctorate Degree from an ABA approved law school.
  • A licensed attorney in good standing in Michigan.
  • 3-10 years of title insurance experience or real estate experience.
  • Knowledge of title insurance rates and rules for all states of responsibility and remain current on all current developments in rules and regulations in the assigned states. 
  • Ability to discuss and review proposed requests for coverage to determine potential risks; to suggest and provide adequate language in title commitments, policies and endorsements that will protect the Company's interests while assisting the Company’s agents.
  • Ability to issue underwriting guidelines for all assigned states.
  • The ability to prepare and deliver relevant presentations to the Company’s customers.
  • The ability to support the development of new customers. 
  • This is a remote position where working from home is a common practice.
  • Occasional travel is required. 

Experience/Training:

  • Title insurance underwriting experience and background.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of real estate and title insurance law in assigned state(s).

Skills:

  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Relevant computer skills: Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, various title data bases.
