What's the opportunity? 🤔

As Filmhub’s Head of Engineering, you will join a team changing how the film industry works. As a core leadership team member, you will lead our product engineering team, work cross-functionally with product and design, make strategic technical decisions, and drive innovative solutions.

You will work closely with our founders, Klaus Badelt (CTO and composer of Pirates of the Caribbean and Gladiator) and Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur Alan d’Escragnolle (CEO), to build the first online platform for the entire film distribution process. Your contributions will be crucial in developing stunning movie listings, creating a dynamic marketplace, optimizing search functionalities, enhancing digital video workflows, and implementing machine learning & AI solutions.

As the Head of Engineering, you will be responsible for shaping our engineering strategy, leading a global team of engineering managers and engineers, and building a structured team of “pods,” each comprising an engineering manager and several engineers. These pods will be dedicated to developing Filmhub’s products.

We seek a process-oriented, metrics-driven leader with an entrepreneurial mindset. At Filmhub, we prioritize developer experience, embrace cutting-edge frameworks and tools, and ensure rapid deployments. Our engineers have full ownership of their work, with new team members deploying their first feature within days.

What will I be doing? 🚀
  • Involved Project Management: Embrace a hands-on approach to project management by actively involving yourself in both the detailed execution and overarching strategy of our engineering team.

  • Leading, supporting, motivating and recruiting a growing group of committed, smart people to do the best work of their careers

  • Teaching, mentoring, coaching, and being a role model for engineers and other engineering managers

  • Work alongside founders, product design, and product management to scope and plan features.

  • Maintain high engineering productivity metrics while balancing fast turnarounds with a high level of code quality. Ship often and early.

  • Conduct and manage code reviews, setting and supervising the quality and style of our codebase

  • Lead, but also love to dig deep into code and infra to set patterns and to research and evaluate new tools, technologies, frameworks, and services

What skills do I need? đź“–
  • You have 6+ years of engineering experience, including at least two years in leadership, managing engineers, building scrappy teams from scratch, and scaling products.

  • Experience in Scaling Tech Startups: A solid track record of leading and scaling engineering teams at startups.

  • Excellent technical acumen: You're excited to ship code as you ramp up to understand our technology stack and build empathy with our engineers.

  • You are passionate about building a product and business that transforms the film industry.

  • You're highly motivated by the prospect of assembling and nurturing a high-performing team: identifying and recruiting top talent, fostering a collaborative environment, and developing team members' skills and careers.

  • You see your purpose as helping each engineer reach their full potential.

  • You can both “lead” and “do.”

  • You are ambitious, scrappy, tenacious, and you get things done

  • You are comfortable making hard decisions and move quickly

  • You are noted as one of the best problem solvers in your organization

  • Experience and expertise with modern frontend frameworks (React, NextJS), backend technologies (serverless, SQL)

  • Video technologies and tools (FFmpeg, streaming, codecs, CDNs) is a plus

  • Infrastructure and operations experience and expertise, preferably both cloud and Jamstack.

  • Familiarity with core Amazon Web Services products. AWS certification is a bonus.
