Job description

Are you excited to work on one of the most important global issues of our time? Are you passionate about making a measurable difference in the battle against food waste? Does working on a small team with the ability to influence direction and drive innovation sound exciting?

Leanpath, the global leader in food waste prevention solutions, has an immediate opportunity for an DevOps Engineer to join the team.

Did you know that 8% of greenhouse gases are linked to wasted food? When you prevent food waste you can significantly reduce GHGs, and fight climate change!

So how do you, as a DevOps engineer, help to end food waste? You bring your skills to bear at Leanpath, a company who’s already fighting food waste with thousands of installations of our hardware-backed SaaS solutions worldwide.

Leanpath has a unique, patented set of hardware that we have deployed globally in the fight against food waste.  Our unique combination of field devices and a data analytics platform that hosts a powerful suite of behavior change tools allow our customers to make informed decisions about purchases and waste prevention.  This can only happen because our applications are built on the DevOps team's resilient, stable, entirely cloud-based infrastructure.  We build our infrastructure with a focus on IaC to ensure repeatability and scalability.

Ok, tell me more…

We'll skip all of the obvious “the team is amazing” stuff and go straight to why you might want to join us (beyond the whole "food waste superhero save the world" thing):

  • Our systems and infrastructure are hosted in Google Cloud Platform.  Our current platform is modern and evolving.  Resilient operations are core to what we do and how we help fight food waste.
  • IaC is the foundation of how we design, build, and maintain our infrastructure.
  • While the position is part of an on-call rotation,  we’re committed to robust operations, so you get to sleep.
  • The team runs Agile, but we aren’t 100% committed to a dogma.  We do what makes sense and evolve as needed.
  • You want to work in a small team of high performers. We like people who are continuous learners, so cross-training and skill-building courses are encouraged.
  • Our core values of Teamwork, Drive & Productivity,  Excellence, Kindness & Inclusion, Humility, and Fairness are central to who we are and how we operate.

What do we need from you?

It’s really important to us that we get the “right person in the right (virtual) seat” for our small yet nimble team.  So, our job descriptions tend to be a bit specific, but even if you don’t check all the boxes, we’d still love to hear from you!

The skills to pay the bills:

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in a DevOps or Operations role.
  • Production experience designing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
  • Production experience with Terraform, Bash, and Python scripting.
  • Production experience with Kubernetes (or managed Kubernetes) administration
  • Have experience with CI/CD platforms - for example Bitbucket Pipelines, Jenkins, Travis, CircleCI, or GitHub Actions
  • Experience working in an Agile environment
  • Great communication skills, and you aren’t afraid to use “radical candor” (practicing kindness, no jerks allowed) with your peers and especially your leaders
  • Commitment to writing and maintaining run books and other critical documentation
  • BS or BA in Computer Science or equivalent work experience

You might be a unicorn if you also:

  • Have experience working with Google Cloud
  • Have work experience as a Network Engineer working with load balancers and other edge network equipment
  • Have experience administering monitoring services, e.g. New Relic, Datadog, Splunk
  • Have experience administering PostgreSQL
  • Have experience with Docker
  • Have experience writing Java
  • Have experience supporting mobile application through public application stores
  • Have a healthy respect for network, application, and system security
  • Have in-depth knowledge of web-service and data-driven application architecture
  • Understand the balance between readability and reusability

Sounds great so far, how far do I have to commute?

This is a remote position but preference will be given to candidates in the Pacific time zone for collaboration & team alignment.  Extra preference for Portland, Oregon area candidates because we like to meet up sometimes.

Ok, what’s next?

So if this sounds like fun, let’s chat! You’ll get a chance to meet with the team, ask questions (and probably answer a couple…) to see if it’s a good fit for you and the team.  Just hit that “apply” button to get started.

I have to ask... salary?

$100-$115K based on relevant experience.

Any limitations?

Ah, you’ve gotten to the bottom of our attempt at a mildly entertaining job posting. Thank you! This is the part that will be a letdown for a few of you, and for that, my apologies.

#1 - Leanpath is unable to provide sponsorship for candidates who do not already have the right to work in the United States.  Bummer, I know. We’re just not big enough to be able to offer this yet….
