Job Description

The role oversees the entire engineering organisation for the Content Group whose mission is “to foster a supportive and collaborative environment, delivering world-class content that delights and drives impact”.

The Content group is a “group of groups” comprising four groups:

  • Content Partnership and Acquisition
  • Content Platform
  • Content Review
  • Content Strategy and Experience

This role will be responsible for setting, coordinating, and delivering engineering efforts across the entire Content groups, working closely with the Content triad and the subsequent group engineering leads.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Set and drive the technical strategy across the Content group in a fast-paced, innovation-focused environment.
  • Collaborate with talented engineers across BE, FE, MLE and DA, to scope and solve complex problems that are highly impactful across the business.
  • Drive planning and refinement of group goals, ensuring there is alignment between the company, group, and teams.
  • Drive delivery of large, cross-team, and cross-group initiatives and projects from ideation to completion.
  • Champion innovative tech projects that utilise ML/AI to accelerate delivery toward Canva’s mission.
  • People manager across engineering in the Content group, coaching and supporting group leads, team leads.
  • Create high-performing and highly engaged teams of world-class engineers who are building for billions of users.
  • Nurture the progression of current members within the team- identifying and developing emerging leaders within the group to create a team for the present and future needs of Canva.
  • Coordinating and communicating across various specialties and parts of the business to understand the impact and feasibility of strategic goals within the group.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Experience running large engineering organisations of 50+ engineers, setting a clear strategy, aligning groups, and guiding the delivery of company missions and goals.
  • Track record of working with engineers and leaders on growth and development opportunities, having previously created high-performing and psychologically safe teams, that continually strive for improvement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; with the ability to work with a diverse range of individuals from different backgrounds, with different expertise, and with different professional and personal needs.
  • Previous experience as a Software Engineer; while not necessarily shipping much code this role still needs needs to be technically capable in driving/coordinating/reviewing engineering projects and ensuring appropriate consideration of engineering tradeoff decisions.
  • Comfort in combining big-picture thinking with sweating the details of execution.
  • An attitude of being a constant learner who relishes global-scale challenges and solutions
  • The ability to inspire others to achieve their full potential and enable the leaders within your organization to build diverse, high-performing teams.
