Contributing Editor - Journal of Christian Nursing (Nurses Christian Fellowship)

To advance the purpose of InterVarsity, this position will assist with procurement and editing of manuscripts and production of the Journal of Christian Nursing (JCN), and assist with publication of other NCF materials as requested.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Publication of the Journal of Christian Nursing:

Mission and Vision -

  • Assist with advancing the NCF mission through the JCN
  • Assist with fulfilling the editorial mission of JCN to help students, nurses, and educators practice from a biblically-based, Christian perspective
  • Act as consultant to JCN Senior Editor
  • Mentor JCN authors on manuscript preparation, organization, submission, and revision

Publication Process –

  • Receive manuscript assignments and review and assign to peer-reviewers at Editorial Manager website; consult when needed with the Senior Editor and Associate Editors.
  • Make decisions on acceptance, rejection, and revision of manuscripts and return to the Senior Editor; consult with the Senior and Associate Editors when needed.
  • Assist with selection of manuscripts for each issue of JCN.
  • Complete copy editing for JCN using APA style on all articles for print, publish ahead-of-print, and online-only publication as assigned; submit to Associate Editor by assigned deadlines
  • Assist with research on article content and check/format all references to the journal style (APA; JCN)
  • Develop and write regular JCN columns as requested
  • Collaborate with the JCN Editorial Team (Editor in Chief, Senior Editor, Associated Editor) on design of articles and the overall journal
  • Evaluate and synthesize each JCN issue’s content and prepare the Table of Contents and submit to the Senior Editor for approval when requested.
  • Collaborate with editorial staff to proof and correct publication proofs (PDFs) and submit to JCN Senior Editor, Associate Editor, or publisher
  • Manage procurement of resources and reviews of books, websites, and other resources for publication in JCN as requested.
  • Collaborate with NCF Director, Senior Editor and Associate Editor to creatively develop and maintain JCN electronic journals platform as requested.
  • Participate in monthly journal planning meetings via video and NCF Team meetings as requested

Leadership -

  • Collaborate with JCN and NCF team to develop ideas for JCN content (feature articles, departments), including recommend concepts and ideas for development of new advertising
  • Be familiar with NCF website for JCN content and presence and help keep NCF web pages up-to-date by communicating updates and/or corrections to appropriate NCF staff
  • Contribute to:
  • Setting vision and direction for the JCN
  • Collaboration with JCN authors, reviewers, JCN publisher staff, and NCF staff to publish each quarterly issue
  • Evaluation of the JCN publication process and annual plan
  • JCN team growth and dependence on God in prayer

Supervision:

  • Oversee day-to-day management of manuscript assignments, and publication work flow based on production deadlines
  • Manage/assist authors and author relationships, serving as the secondary contact between JCN and authors of assigned manuscripts (Associate Editor is primary contact).

Contribute to the effectiveness of the team:

  • Contribute to open and supportive relationships with JCN and NCF team members, supervisors, and national movement
  • Provide NCF membership support services as requested, such as responding to queries from nurses in your geographic area or promoting NCF and membership at conferences and events that you attend.

Maintain sound financial status for the area:

  • Secure personal financial and prayer support as directed by the NCF National Director
  • Comply with all InterVarsity Ministry Partnership Policies
  • Maintain expenses within allocated budget

Assure compliance with InterVarsity policies and procedures:

  • Adhere to the risk management policies
  • Follow the budgeting and expense reporting guidelines
  • Fulfill monthly reporting requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Annually affirm:
    • InterVarsity’s Statement of Agreement  
    • InterVarsity’s Code of Conduct 
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (Nursing, Journalism, English, Communications, Media Arts are helpful majors)
  • Current RN licensure in state of residence
  • 3-5 years clinical nursing experience and/or in nursing education
  • 3-5 years of writing and editing experience
  • 3-5 years’ experience with computers, online systems/programs, and website editing  
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook/Email, PowerPoint)
  • Working knowledge of APA formatting and style

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn online manuscript management systems

Pay Range: $23.70 - $31.60 per hour

Pay: This position is funded through personal fundraising. Accordingly, compensation will vary based on the ability of the individual to secure a donor team to fund the cost of his/her salary. The anticipated salary range for this position on a full-time basis (40 hours/week) is dependent on a variety of factors, including location and cost of living. The actual salary received, including any geographic adjustment to account for location and cost of living, is subject to the individual’s ability to raise funds necessary to cover the full amount of such salary within the range set forth in the job posting details.
