The Information Security Office (ISO) assures the security of the university's Information Technology (IT) resources and the existence of a safe computing environment in which the university community can teach, learn, and conduct research. As part of ISO, the University of Texas Regional Security Operations Center (UT RSOC) will be focused on delivering a variety of cybersecurity services to various non-profit and/or government funded entities throughout the state (e.g., ISDs, municipalities) to raise awareness, improve security posture and resilience, etc. for entities that otherwise might not have much to work with. The UT RSOC will also provide a fantastic new experiential learning space for students to both provide important cybersecurity services across the state and develop valuable, concentrated cybersecurity experience for their futures and serve as an anchor for an eventual applied cybersecurity degree program. This position is funded by a grant from the State of Texas. Continued funding beyond the term of the grant is expected but is not guaranteed beyond 8/31/2026.

Purpose
The Training Coordinator will design, implement, and maintain a cybersecurity training program for student employees. They will ensure all students have the skills to provide key services, using HackTheBox and the NIST NICE framework, and focus on onboarding and ongoing skill development.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain training programs: Design and implement structured training curriculum using HackTheBox and other cybersecurity learning platforms. Ensure training aligns with NIST NICE framework, and create individualized development plans for students to track progress across various cybersecurity roles and skills.
- HackTheBox Platform Management: Manage and administer HackTheBox platform licenses and ensure that training activities are aligned with RSOC objectives. Regularly assess and curate HackTheBox modules to align with current cybersecurity threats and operational needs and provide hands-on guidance and support to students navigating HackTheBox challenges, ensuring they gain practical experience in cybersecurity techniques and incident response.
- Student training and onboarding: Develop an onboarding program for new student employees that includes both technical training and RSOC operational procedures. Conduct workshops, live training sessions, and one-on-one coaching to reinforce cybersecurity concepts and skills. Organize hackathons, capture-the-flag (CTF) events, and collaborative learning exercises to encourage peer learning and skill sharpening.
- Continuous Learning and Mentorship: Facilitate ongoing training sessions, ensuring that students stay updated on the latest cybersecurity threats, tools, and methodologies. Mentor students and help them apply training to real-world RSOC tasks, such as threat hunting, vulnerability management, and incident response. Establish a feedback loop to assess training effectiveness and refine the curriculum as needed.
- Collaboration and Reporting: Work closely with the RSOC Manager and engineers from the Information Security Office to align training with operational needs and future service offerings. Track student progress, maintain records of certifications and completed training, and report on training outcomes. Assist in preparing students for certifications that align with the RSOC's objectives (e.g., CompTIA Security+, Splunk certification).
- Outreach and External Collaboration: Collaborate with other Texas-based RSOCs and the Texas Department of Information Resources to share best practices, resources, and training materials. Support outreach efforts aimed at recruiting new talent and raising awareness of the experiential learning opportunities offered through the RSOC.

Required Qualifications
- U.S. Citizen, resident, or officially recognized asylee - Applicant selected will be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position.
- Two years of demonstrated experience in public speaking/presentation skills.
- A minimum of 4 years of experience delivering information security services.
- A minimum of 4 years of experience mentoring and leading teams.
- Excellent written and oral skills, ability to work closely with multiple groups, manage expectations and track engagement scope.
- Strong technical acumen with the ability to be operationally conversant.
- Demonstrated passion for teaching others about information security.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5-7 Years of operational cybersecurity experience.
- 3 or more years using Splunk in a cybersecurity program.
- Experience mentoring and leading student employees or junior employees who require a heavily structured onboarding process to ensure their success.
- Experience assessing and finding security gaps to help improve security posture.
- Experience consulting on cybersecurity with a variety of constituencies.
- Experience in producing metrics to report of the UT RSOC program and impact.
- Good knowledge of CIS & other industry standard benchmarks and frameworks.
- Certifications related to security (CISSP, CISM, etc).
Salary Range
$90,000 + depending on qualifications

- This is a hybrid remote/in-office position. The majority of time will need to be spent on campus to interact and oversee student employees serving the UT Regional Security Operations Center (UT RSOC), but remote work is allowable as is reasonable or suitable to the work being performed.
