Job description

Mize CPAs Inc. was recently named a Top 200 Workplace for 2024 by USA Today! We are a leading regional accounting and IT firm with offices in Topeka and Overland Park, Kansas. Our firm works with clients in a number of industries and has a rapidly growing restaurant and hospitality division that serves clients nationwide.

We are looking for an in-person only Tax Staff Accountant in the Overland Park office. Full-time availability is needed, 2300 hours per year. After initial training of approximately 9 - 12 months and a successful spring and fall season, a hybrid-remote work schedule can be discussed.

If you are the right person for this opportunity, you will have experience preparing personal, corporate, partnership, S-corp, fiduciary, and non-profit tax returns. You should be able to make decisions on all but the most unusual tax matters.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes tax information submitted by client; advises client of questions or concerns
  • Utilize knowledge of tax regulations in order to answer clients’ questions
  • Assume overall responsibility for the completion of tax returns, exercising judgment when additional expertise may be needed from more experienced staff
  • Prepares personal, corporate, partnership, S-corp, fiduciary, and non-profit tax returns of various complexities
  • Prepares amended returns of any variety and complexity, as well as tax research projects
  • Prepares personal and business tax projections
  • Responds to tax notices of any sort and drafts required responses
  • Prepares property tax refund forms, employee benefit plan tax returns, carryback returns for NOLs, and other specialized tax returns
  • Completes S-election and requests for accounting changes, as required
  • Prepares tax accruals as may be required in preparing corporate tax returns
  • Maintains a good understanding of depreciation and depreciation computer software package to set up clients, and analyzes and understands depreciation reports
  • Ability to work hours necessary to meet deadlines for work assigned
  • Organize schedule to meet the requirements of the assignments
  • Occasional same day travel for client meetings and seminars; sometimes out of town meetings or seminars

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • In-office work through two tax seasons (fall and spring), due to the interaction necessary with trainer; amount of time required will vary based on the individual's experience and abilities
  • Individuals at this level normally have at least a bachelor's degree with major in Accounting, or other related business field; or equivalent accounting experience
  • Zero to two years' experience with tax preparation in public accounting
  • Strong technical knowledge and skills
  • Proficiency in use of accounting and tax software

  • CPA-eligible

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Creative problem solving ability
