Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced senior Social Performance expert for the role of Technical Consulting Director in ERM Germany to provide expert guidance on social impact and human rights management systems, social risk management, and social impact assessments in the context of capital project development, sustainable operations, climate action and nature-based solutions for clients across various industry sectors, including energy, sustainable finance, mining, and agri-chem. We expect the candidate to have a strong commitment to driving social innovation and promoting sustainable development among, mainly, European companies operating in the region and abroad.
The ideal candidate will bring at least 20 years of experience in the field of social performance and be familiar with the methods pertaining to meaningful stakeholder engagement, environmental and social impact metrics and reporting, grievance mechanisms and with issues such as consultation and information rights, land acquisition, and livelihood restoration. The consultant will sit with Capital Projects Delivery Team in ERM Germany and collaborate with the Social Impact & Human Rights Voyager (incubating service) ensuring that all social aspects of projects are aligned with international standards, such as the World Bank Environmental and Social Standards (ESS), IFC Performance Standards, and other international financial institutions' best practices. The candidate will also have the opportunity to interact with Social Impact and ESG experts sitting in with the Corporate Sustainability and Climate Change teams and who are supporting clients align with the latest regulations and standards on environmental and human rights due diligence, nature, integrity for carbon off set projects and just transition principles. Fluency in both German and English is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Liaise with expert peers within client organizations at both corporate and project levels, providing high-level expertise and advisory services to project teams. Focus on identifying, assessing, and managing social risks in accordance with domestic regulations, best practices, and guidelines from international financial institutions (IFIs).
- Promote a proactive approach to managing social impacts and addressing challenges early in the project lifecycle, with a strong emphasis on sectors such as energy, sustainable finance, mining, and nature-based solutions.
- Lead the preparation of Social Impact Assessments and other required social documentation, ensuring alignment with international standards, including the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Standards (ESS), IFC guidelines, and other global frameworks.
- Apply a strategic approach to risk identification, particularly in emerging markets, ensuring social risks are effectively mitigated and project opportunities are maximized for local communities, especially in the energy, sustainable finance, and mining sectors.
- Provide actionable recommendations to mitigate social risks and optimize project benefits.
- Ensure human rights considerations are central to the project’s social planning.
- Offer expert guidance on the development and implementation of Resettlement Action Plans (RAPs) and livelihood restoration strategies, ensuring compliance with international best practices and project-specific needs. Advise on conflict-sensitive approaches to land acquisition that respect local rights and minimize displacement impacts.
- Support the design and implementation of stakeholder engagement plans and grievance mechanisms, ensuring active and transparent engagement with local communities, authorities, and key stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle. Incorporate culturally sensitive strategies to ensure the inclusion of underrepresented groups and marginalized communities, particularly in emerging markets within sectors like mining, energy, and nature-based solutions.
- Provide training and capacity-building support to internal teams, contractors, and key stakeholders on topics such as social impact management, human rights, and community relations. Focus on knowledge transfer and skills development in emerging markets, empowering local stakeholders and teams to drive social performance improvement.
- Identify and promote innovative approaches to enhancing social outcomes, including gender equality, community health, and social inclusion within the project framework. Leverage social innovation to address specific challenges in emerging markets, such as improving social inclusion, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and developing nature-based solutions in energy and infrastructure projects. Advocate for projects that deliver lasting, transformative change in affected communities.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 20 years of international experience in consulting roles, with a focus on social impact assessment, human rights, indigenous peoples, land acquisition, and livelihood restoration.
- A proven track record of working with international financial institutions (World Bank, IFC, EBRD) and applying their social safeguard policies.
- Extensive experience providing consultancy services on large-scale capital projects, particularly in key sectors such as energy, sustainable finance, mining, and nature-based solutions.
- Expert knowledge of social safeguard policies and standards from institutions such as the World Bank, IFC, and other international financial institutions (IFIs).
- Demonstrated expertise in designing and leading socially innovative solutions that enhance project outcomes and community benefits in emerging markets.
- A strong consulting background with the ability to independently lead projects and provide strategic advice.
- Expertise in stakeholder engagement and conflict resolution in multicultural settings.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both German and English.
