Job description

This non-profit is currently seeking a detail-oriented and organised Finance Officer for a 1-year fixed term contract. Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will be responsible for handling day-to-day financial transactions, including accounts payable, receivables, and payroll. Your duties will involve ensuring accurate bookkeeping, performing reconciliations, and assisting with financial reporting. By efficiently managing routine financial tasks and maintaining accurate data entry, you will play a vital role in supporting the finance team and contributing to the overall financial health of the organisation. This position is available immediately. Remote working will be considered within South Africa, with a preference for candidates based in Cape Town.


Responsibilities:
Financial Operations:
Process financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations, ensuring timely and accurate recording of all financial data.
Prepare and post journal entries to record adjustments, reclassifications, and accruals in line with the organisation’s financial reporting policies.
Track expenses, ensuring proper documentation and adherence to budget allocations.
Perform regular reconciliation of general ledger accounts, ensuring that financial transactions are properly recorded.

Banking & Payments:
Monitor daily cash balances and maintain bank and cash records.
Review/Prepare and load payment batches for review and authorisation, including vendor payments, salaries, and grants.
Assist with the processing of foreign currency transactions, ensuring compliance with internal controls and funder agreements.

Asset management:
Maintain the asset register, ensuring all acquisitions and disposals are recorded accurately.
Assist in tracking depreciation and with periodic asset audits.

Grant Financial Management:
Track expenses, ensuring proper documentation and adherence to budget allocations.
Conduct monthly reconciliations of key accounts.
Perform reviews of grantee applications and supporting documents.

Compliance, Document Management & Filing:
Maintain proper filing systems for financial documents, ensuring compliance with internal controls and regulatory requirements.
Support the preparation of financial documents for audits and reviews.
Ensure compliance with donor and organisational policies in transaction processing.


Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
At least 5 years' relevant experience in accounting, bookkeeping of financial operations.
Strong background in accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries and reconciliations.
Payroll experience is highly advantageous.
Experience working with grant/donor funding and multi-currency operations is preferred.
Familiarity with tax compliance in South Africa, including VAT and the preparation of these financial reports.
Advanced computer literacy, especially Excel and Xero or similar accounting packages.

Skills & Competencies:
Proficient in financial systems (e.g. XERO, Quickbooks, Netsuite, SAGE) and ability to maintain accurate financial records.
Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
Ability to prepare and post journal entries, including month-end closing processes.
Skilled in reconciling accounts (e.g. bank reconciliations, balance sheet accounts) and identifying discrepancies.
Solid understanding of payroll processing, tax calculations and statutory returns.
Ability to manage the fixed asset register and perform routine asset management activities.

Problem-solving skills to resolve complex financial and transactional issues efficiently.

Benefits

Salary: R35 000 - R40 000
