U-Haul International, Inc. seeks a full-time hybrid Real Estate / Risk and Regulatory Compliance Paralegal with at least 2 years of relevant experience to join its Legal Department. Experience in one or more of these areas is preferred.
Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will provide in-house paralegal support to include, but not limited to, the following duties and responsibilities per area of expertise:
Real Estate:
Coordinate and assist in eminent domain and condemnation proceedings.
Research and analyze local zoning regulations and ordinances; manage cases involving property code violations.
Prepare and submit applications for conditional use permits, zoning variances, and other land-use permits.
Monitor compliance with land-use permits and zoning approval.
Assist in drafting and filing legal responses to code enforcement actions, permit disputes, and property condemnations.
Collaborate with attorneys, property owners, developers, and regulatory bodies.
Maintain detailed records of condemnation proceedings, code violations, and permit approvals.
Main point of contact for real estate matters via phone, email and hearings.
Risk and Regulatory Compliance:
Conduct comprehensive legal research on evolving federal, state, and local regulations, focusing on risk management, compliance, and industry-specific legislation.
Monitor and track regulatory developments, including proposed bills, new regulations, and case law updates.
Assist in the interpretation and application of regulations, advising internal business groups on compliance strategies.
Develop and maintain a regulatory tracking system to organize and streamline updates on key legal and regulatory changes affecting business operations.
Prepare detailed reports and summaries of regulatory changes, highlighting potential impacts on company policies, procedures, and risk management strategies.
Collaborate with risk management teams to identify regulatory risks and recommend proactive measures to ensure compliance with all applicable laws.
Support the drafting of company policies and procedures to align with current regulatory requirements.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate will:
Have 2 or more years of relevant experience in a law firm, public, or corporate environment and be familiar with litigation fundamentals, e.g., evidentiary and procedural rules, proper file management, attorney-client privilege.
Be responsive, responsible, practical, proactive, organized, and detail oriented.
Have outstanding verbal and written communication skills; a strong work ethic; sound judgment; and good time management habits.
Work well both independently and as part of a team.
Enjoy a fast-paced and challenging environment.
Be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
Prior experience with Bloomberg Law, Westlaw, GovHawk and Legal Tracker are preferred, but not required.
