Position Summary:

The Senior Director, External Innovation, Oncology will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and pursuing business development transactions to expand and enhance the oncology portfolio. The transactions will range from mergers and acquisitions to in/out-licensing and R&D collaborations, covering all cancer treatment modalities.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Co-lead scientific and technical assessment of external oncology opportunities.

  • Identify novel targets, biology, and therapeutic platforms that have the potential support development of innovative medicines.

  • For relevant opportunities, ensure comprehensive technical diligence is conducted (in partnership with functional area SMEs).

  • Monitor the external landscape (via news, medical meetings, etc.) and provide tangible insights to scientific and business leadership.

  • Manage communication/relationships with external parties, and see deals through the stages of diligence, negotiation, and signing.

  • Participate in cross-functional oncology meetings, representing business development’s role in portfolio shaping.

  • Build trust and credibility with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Agency, ownership, clear communication, relationship-building, decision-making agility, and sound scientific and business judgment are key to success in this position.

Basic Requirements:

  • Master's degree required.

  • Minimum 5 years’ work experience in the biotech/pharma sector within industry, venture capital (or similar) setting supporting successful deals across the R&D space.

Additional Preferences:

  • PhD in life sciences strongly preferred

  • Strong scientific acumen and understanding of drug discovery/development.

  • Relevant scientific research and/or investment experience.

  • Experience in oncology (across modalities and program stages) strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams in evaluating investment opportunities.

  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal/relationship-building skills, scientific & business judgment.

  • Highly organized with a proven ability to think through and execute on plans to answer complex questions; ability to adjust with agility to changing priorities & fact patterns.

  • Proactive and collaborative, with a proven ability to work effectively across domains (scientific, legal, financial).

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting.

Lilly currently anticipates that the base salary for this position could range from between $150,000 to $220,000 and will depend, in part, on the successful candidate’s qualifications for the role, including education and experience. Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance). In addition, Lilly offers a comprehensive benefit program to eligible employees, including eligibility to participate in a company-sponsored 401(k); pension; vacation benefits; eligibility for medical, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits; flexible benefits (e.g., healthcare and/or dependent day care flexible spending accounts); life insurance and death benefits; certain time off and leave of absence benefits; and well-being benefits (e.g., employee assistance program, fitness benefits, and employee clubs and activities).Of course, the compensation described above is subject to change and could be higher or lower than the range described above.
