The primary role of the Structural Engineer II is to determine the suitability of architectural aluminum products used in commercial applications. The position requires thorough knowledge of curtainwall and storefront façade design, and civil/structural engineering.  The Structural Engineer independently plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the evaluation, application, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and design criteria. The Engineer will devise unique approaches to resolve structural challenges to product applications. They will perform structural calculations, prepare or modify drawings and/or specifications, create charts and graphs, and monitor work for compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering practices at AFS.

Principle Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Provides technical support to external clients, architects, and vendors as well as internal clients (estimating, order entry, manufacturing, marketing, sales and purchasing)

  • Reviews projects for proper application and engineering of ASF systems and products to meet or exceed performance requirements as outlined in published specifications for the project.

  • Fully capable of performing structural reviews of storefront and curtainwall for all levels of complexity.

  • Addresses client questions and concerns regarding system application, design fabrication and installation.

  • Identifies needs and drives activities in product and application research, analysis, and validation and testing.

  • Provides written reports documenting recommendations and summarizing results of analysis and testing.

  • Creates job specific detail drawings for clients and architects.

  • Develops engineering policies and procedures in conjunction with Structural Engineering Supervisor.

  • Ensures that department goals are met and that projects are completed on time, accurately, and within budget – Act with a sense of urgency.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in related Engineering field. Mechanical, Civil, or equivalent.

  • A minimum of five years of progressive experience in engineering.  Fewer years will be considered if accompanied by an advanced engineering degree and / or a Professional Engineering License.

  • Ability to read and interpret architectural/structural drawings and specifications.

  • Ability to interpret test reports and apply as tested concepts.

  • Knowledge of national building codes and appropriate application.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Works independently with little outside input required.

  • Proficient using 2D and 3D CAD design and analysis software 

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft software (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

  • Experience with AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, Inventor and C-Beam or other structural software.

  • Ability to perform advanced structural analysis.

Requirements, Preferred

  • Fully understands Storefront and Curtainwall design and analysis.

  • Comprehensive product knowledge.

  • Working knowledge of Thermal Analysis software.

  • Experience in project management.

  • Effective team leadership

  • Sound business judgment
