The Senior Director of Credit Risk, within the Enterprise Risk Management team, will play a key role in how we deliver a first class merchant experience for our high credit risk customers. This role will help drive multiple initiatives including; credit risk review for applicants and existing customers with significant exposure, deal structuring for complex opportunities, high credit risk monitoring, upskilling our Enterprise Underwriters, effective communication with sales partners and merchants, and driving a positive merchant experience for our largest customers.
Reporting directly to the VP of Underwriting & Portfolio Management, the primary focus of the Senior Director of Credit Risk is to review Credit Risk Assessment (CRA) write-ups prepared by Underwriting and Portfolio Management, ensuring that the business model, risk and mitigants were assessed appropriately, and act as a decision maker. A successful candidate for this role will be strong in financial analysis, business model risk identification, deal structuring, credit risk monitoring, workout situations, training and developing team members, communication, and has an eye for continuous process and tools improvement.
What you'll do:
- Review and decision Credit Risk Assessment (CRA) write-ups prepared by our Underwriting & Portfolio Management teams.
- Develop creative deal structures to provide a path forward for good merchants with high credit risk.
- Monitor the trends of high credit risk customers to ensure the current terms structure are appropriate.
- Develop workout or exit strategies for underperforming merchants who pose elevated risk.
- Communicate directly with Sales leaders and merchants providing a positive experience.
- Analyze large opportunity pre-screens and provide clear and concise requirements for a path forward.
- Create training materials and administer training to help grow and develop our credit risk teams.
- Understand NAB’s Credit Policies, procedures, and tools.
- Identify and develop improvements to our Credit Policies, procedures, and tools.
- Monitor industry trends and create risk appetite strategies.
- Collaborate with other ERM Department personnel to improve how we manage high credit risk customers, providing an experience that is explainable and easy to understand.
- Other duties may be assigned by the VP of Underwriting & Portfolio Management, including ad hoc requests.
What we need from you:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics (or equivalent work experience).
- Minimum 8 years of commercial underwriting experience or commercial risk mitigation experience in the bank card industry/payment processing or related field.
- Excellent conflict resolution skills and emotional intelligence to be able to manage relationships with applicants, internal staff and external customers (agents, vendors and key business partners relationships.
- Must be comfortable and confident in handling a position of authority when making underwriting decisions, as well as executing accurate judgment in regards to interactions with Sales Partners and merchants over the phone and through email.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize and handle combination of relationships with applicants, internal staff and external customers (agents, vendors and key business partners relationships).
- Critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem solving skills with the ability to independently solve problems using data.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff, management, vendors, sales agents, and merchants.
- Team-oriented individual with a positive attitude who enjoys working with and for others.
- Ability to adapt priorities for peak periods to ensure consistency of service levels for sales partners and merchants.

Salary Range: $130,000 - $216,000
Pay within this range varies by work location and on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. We look forward to discussing your salary expectations and our full total rewards offerings throughout the interview process.
Travel required: Travel to the Troy, MI headquarters and other sites as needed.
