Job Summary:

The Director of Accounting plays a pivotal role in overseeing the financial operations of the company's Tokyo office. This position involves managing a wide range of accounting functions, including Accounts Receivable (AR), Purchase Orders (PO), Accounts Payable (AP), commission calculations, order processing, fixed asset management, taxation, and general accounting tasks. The incumbent will ensure compliance with Japan GAAP and US GAAP standards while collaborating closely with various internal teams and external stakeholders. The Director of Accounting maintains accurate financial records, facilitates timely payments, and provides valuable insights to support strategic decision-making. This role requires a detail-oriented individual, a deep understanding of accounting principles, and the ability to thrive in a dynamic and multicultural environment.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

General Ledger:

  • Prepare journal entries for payrolls, accruals, marketing funds, rebates, etc.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts excluding revenue.
  • Prepare weekly payment schedules and collection projections.
  • Register fixed assets and post related invoices.
  • Register and maintain fixed asset schedules under Japan GAAP.
  • Prepare Trial Balances (TB) and Financial Statements under Japan GAAP.
  • Participate in US GAAP audit.

Tax:

  • Reconcile consumption tax (Input and Output tax).
  • Prepare tax accruals under Japan GAAP.
  • Prepare Account details and Summaries of Statements for corporate tax returns.
  • Prepare and file Establishment tax returns.
  • Prepare and file annual Withholding Income Tax reports.
  • Prepare and file depreciable fixed asset tax returns.

Accounts Receivable (AR):

  • Issue consolidated invoices to customers and post consumption tax.
  • Perform cash application of collections from customers.
  • Reconcile payment notices from customers to our records.
  • Post credit memos.
  • Reconcile AR balances and review AR aging reports.

Accounts Payable (AP):

  • Post purchase invoices.
  • Reconcile AP balances and review AP aging reports.
  • Prepare payments to vendors and employees, ensuring timely bank payments.
  • Review and pay employees’ expense reports.
  • Manage local bank accounts in Japan, ensuring the collection and transfer of funds to foreign bank accounts and for payment of various taxes.

Commissions Management:

  • Prepare monthly revenue reports for commission purposes.
  • Calculate commissions for salespeople and send the attainment reports.
  • Submit commission templates for payroll.

Order Processing:

  • Review and approve IRF, upgrade orders, and daily shipping schedules.
  • Maintain MSP orders list.
  • Review and approve RMA and update RMA in Salesforce.
  • Review the shipping list and confirm that the fulfillment emails are delivered.
  • Review monthly booking reports.

Purchase Orders (PO):

  • Review PO requests for Appliance orders and issue POs.
  • Review PO requests for marketing, IT, and other expenses and issue POs.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related field. 
  • Seven plus years of progressively responsible experience for a small or mid-sized company or a division of a large corporation.          
  • Bilingual Japanese and English.
  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations a plus.  
  • Expertise with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Teams and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint.
  • Expertise with ERP/Accounting systems.
  • Experience working for a technology company with multi-national operations a plus.
  • Experience working with NAVision (Business Central), NetSuite and Concur a plus.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
