About The Position

LSM Director of Advocacy will lead the development and implementation of LSM’s advocacy strategy, supporting global, regional and grassroots campaigning and Catholic collaborations to help raise the local, regional and global Catholic voices for just and ambitious action on the socio-ecological crises.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Hold the vision for and oversee the implementation of LSM’s global advocacy strategy.
  • Lead the development and implementation of global campaign strategies and one-off campaign actions in close collaboration with the regional teams.
  • Design, implement, and review policies and systems for advocacy.
  • Continue to develop LSM’s Theory of Change for advocacy and refine strategy accordingly.
  • Work with other Directors to support the implementation of LSM’s strategic framework.
  • Contribute to the development of LSM position statements and policy positions where required.


Management

  • Manage LSM’s advocacy core team.
  • Coordinating with regional teams regarding advocacy team engagement with regional work.
  • Establish and manage LSM advocacy governance structures such as advocacy regional working groups in close collaboration with regional teams.
  • Ensure LSM advocacy is integrated into all LSM’s programs and campaigns as appropriate.


Representation and communication

  • Represent LSM in key advocacy spaces, especially in high-level policy spaces of the Church or secular.
  • Establish or nurture relations and collaboration with key Catholic, faith-based, and secular advocacy allies.
  • Public speaking and media work.
  • Providing policy and advocacy-related briefings for senior LSM staff.


Programmatic work

  • Designs, overviews and monitors advocacy programmes in close collaboration with regional teams.
  • In collaboration with the development team and the executive director explores funding opportunities for LSM’s advocacy programs.
  • Supports the development team to grow fundraising for LSM’s advocacy work integrated into regional and global programmes.


Training

  • Support the development and improvement of LSM advocacy training programs.
  • In collaboration with the Laudato Si Animators Program, design and implement an LSM advocacy course.
  • Support and initiate advocacy training programs in regional teams.


Skills And Characteristics

  • 8 to 10 years of strategic leadership on advocacy initiatives or campaigns.
  • 8 - 10 years of experience working on environmental international campaigning.
  • At least 5 years of working in an international matrix organization.
  • Strong experience in climate mitigation and the UNFCCC processes.
  • 8 - 10 years of management of teams; (preference with experience of managing remote teams in the last 2 - 3 years).
  • Public speaking experience.
  • Skilled in writing policy briefs and concept notes.
  • Experience in working with Church actors.
  • Proven fundraising experience in advocacy programs.
  • Knowledge of international climate and environmental policy issues from a global justice perspective, UN political processes, development or delivery of advocacy.


Languages: English. Preference for an additional language: Spanish, French or Portuguese

Hours: 40 hours per week (full-time)

Location: Anywhere, but with a preference for South Africa, the Philippines, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, and Nigeria

Work environment: This position is performed remotely from anywhere in the world. The hours are set by the director and should include significant overlap with business hours in Europe. Availability to travel is required.
