Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and dynamic senior safety professional to help design, develop, and deploy the strategic safety processes that bring that most important organizational virtue to life within our rapidly growing organization. The Senior Safety Manager - Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene, and Occupational Health helps design, develop, and deploy organizational processes focused on controlling workplace hazards, implementing ergonomic and industrial hygiene programs, and promoting occupational health initiatives to minimize risks and enhance employee well-being.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ergonomics:
    • Conduct ergonomic assessments and recommend modifications to workstations, tools, and processes to reduce musculoskeletal disorders and other ergonomic-related injuries.
    • Develop and implement ergonomics training programs for employees and management.
    • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to integrate ergonomic principles into new and existing processes and equipment.
    • Evaluate material handling and manual handling tasks using the NIOSH Lifting Equation and similar evaluation tools to identify and mitigate risks associated with lifting, lowering, and carrying tasks.
  • Industrial Hygiene:
    • Perform exposure assessments for chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards in the workplace. This includes completing qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments either directly, or by directing the work of third-party IH specialists.
    • Implement monitoring programs for air quality, noise levels, and other occupational exposures.
    • Develop and maintain industrial hygiene protocols and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA, ACGIH).
    • Recommend and implement control measures, such as engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE), to mitigate identified hazards.
    • Develop and manage respiratory protection programs to ensure proper use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment.
  • Occupational Health:
    • Coordinate occupational health programs, including health surveillance, medical evaluations, and wellness initiatives.
    • Skillfully manage injury/illness case management, and return-to-work policies and support programs that guide the impacted employee's process towards full recovery and well-being.
    • Work with healthcare providers and workers compensation administrators to manage occupational injuries and illnesses, ensuring timely treatment and return-to-work plans.
    • Develop and deliver health and wellness training programs focused on injury prevention, stress management, and overall employee well-being.
    • Analyze health and injury data to identify trends and recommend preventive measures.
    • Regulatory Compliance:
      • Manage the company's compliance with OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom), including systems for maintaining Safety Data Sheets (SDS), labeling, and employee training.
      • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety and health regulations.
      • Prepare and submit required reports and documentation to regulatory agencies.
      • Stay updated on changes in regulations and industry best practices to ensure ongoing compliance and continuous improvement.
    • Risk Assessment and Incident Investigation:
      • Conduct risk assessments and job hazard analyses (JHAs) for various tasks and processes.
      • Lead investigations into ergonomic-related injuries, occupational illnesses, and other health-related incidents, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.
    • Continuous Improvement:
      • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvement in safety, health, and ergonomics programs.
      • Participate in safety committees, audits, and other initiatives aimed at enhancing workplace safety culture.
    Key Competencies

    • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret and apply data to improve workplace safety.
    • Excellent communication and training skills, with the ability to influence and engage employees at all levels.
    • Proficiency in using safety management systems and industrial hygiene equipment.
    • Strong knowledge of OSHA standards and other relevant regulations.

    Professional Experience/Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
    • Minimum of 7 years of experience in a safety-related role within an industrial manufacturing environment.
    • Demonstrated expertise in ergonomics, industrial hygiene, and occupational health.
    • Demonstrable experience using the NIOSH Lifting Equation to evaluate material handling and other manual handling tasks.
    • Experience managing injury/illness cases and implementing return-to-work policies that support employees' recovery and well-being.
    • Experience developing and managing respiratory protection programs to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
    • Experience managing compliance with OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom) to ensure proper hazard communication within the company.
    • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE), or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is highly desirable.

    Other

    • Ability to conduct site assessments and inspections, including climbing stairs, walking long distances, and wearing appropriate PPE.
    • Approximately 40% travel to manufacturing sites as required. This can vary depending on organizational needs.
    • This role will work extensively in industrial manufacturing environments with exposure to various physical and environmental conditions.
