Summary of Job Duties:
Clinical Pharmacy Specialists (CPS) are responsible and accountable for the provision of safe, effective, and prompt medication therapy. CPS work under minimal supervision to provide direct patient centered care and integrated pharmacy operational services that optimize the patient care experience and drive organizational performance.

A Clinical Pharmacy Specialist provides to the department expertise not routinely available in the pharmacy staff. The abilities these individuals have may include a broad background in specific clinical areas (such as hematology/oncology and total parenteral nutrition), or the individual may have expertise in specific pharmacy management areas (such as formulary management, information systems, drug utilization evaluation, or investigational drugs).

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy or BS Pharmacy Degree

  • Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY-1 residency and/or at least 3 years previous clinical experience in hematology/oncology

  • Certification as a licensed Registered Pharmacist by the State of Arkansas or eligible for licensure.

  • Certification to administer immunizations by the State Board of Pharmacy or eligible for certification to administer immunizations

Preferred:

  • Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY2 residency in Oncology,

  • Board certification

  • Five (5) years of experience working as a clinical pharmacist in hematology/oncology and /or stem cell transplant


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a clinical pharmacy practice with the goal of optimizing safe, effective, and affordable medication therapy

  • Review treatment plans for appropriateness and proper dosing based on the documented diagnosis and the objective information found in patient’s chart as well as current guidelines

  • Pharmacokinetic drug monitoring and dose adjustment; manage immunosuppression medications post-stem cell transplant and adjust based on levels (i.e. tacrolimus, sirolimus, cyclosporine)

  • Coordinate vaccinations post-stem cell transplant, assisting with logistics of clinic-administered vs pharmacy-administered per payor requirements

  • Participate in protocol and order set development, formulary management, drug utilization reviews, and cost-savings initiatives

  • Coordinate care with the Prior Authorization team to ensure timely authorization and start of anticancer therapy, including both treatment and therapy plans. Acquiring authorization is not the responsibility of CPS; care coordination occurs when necessary
