Summary of Job Duties:
The Department of Pathology Gross Room and Morgue Histotechnician is responsible for a broad range of duties and activities critical to the functioning of Anatomic Pathology (AP). The objective of this position is to ensure a safe and organized environment for patient care by accounting for specimen acceptability, accessioning, correct specimen labeling, grossing, frozen preparation, stocking and utilizing grossing consumables, operating and performing preventative maintenance on equipment, releasing and receiving of bodies in the morgue, and assisting with post-mortem examinations. This position provides histological skills in the core Histology lab and IHC when needed under the supervision of the Histology or IHC supervisor. This position works under the supervision of the Gross Room/Morgue Supervisor, AP Manager, and the Medical Director of Anatomic Pathology. This position requires weekend and Holiday coverage on rotation with other Gross Room/Morgue employees.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Associates degree in laboratory science, medical laboratory technology degree - OR - 60 credit hours obtained from an accredited institution that must include 12 credit hours of Biology & Chemistry. 
  • ASCP Histotechnician certification (HT) eligible. One year to obtain ASCP HT certification after completion of 12 consecutive months of full time on the job training in an anatomic pathology or histotechnology laboratory.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • One or more years of Anatomic Pathology experience.
  • ASCP HT certification
  • EPIC training

Additional Information:
  • Records and interpret test results, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  • Performs quality control and preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment and temperature control required by regulatory entities. Assist in lab inventory control, cleanliness and organization.
  • Ensures proper handling and processing of all specimens received in the lab, including but not limited to, patient identification, specimen protocol triage, specimen and lab troubleshooting, grossing, embedding, frozen sections, etc.
  • Other duties as needed.
