Job description

We have a great opportunity for a Large Loss Appraiser who uses their technical expertise and is responsible to accurately assess building damages! They are also responsible to provide both emergency mitigation and structural scopes of repairs in accordance with industry construction practices and standards as well as in conjunction with company standards. In addition, provide reliable assurance of an effective control environment with respect to building losses, focusing on the scope, repair, quality and customer experience. This role requires the ability to read and interpret scopes/estimates from Aviva Premiere Vendors as well as non -Premiere vendors and provide comprehensive feedback and establish an action plan as required in accordance with Aviva protocols and standard methodologies. The role is in support of Claims Operations, while adhering to the protocols established and managed by Aviva Supplier Management and the Loss Assessment Unit.

What you'll do:
  • Provide support to the Handling Adjuster in assessing, leading and controlling emergency mitigation following a loss in excess of $250,000.00, through ensuring that a clear mandate and costing is established with the contractor as quickly as possible with an agreed timeline.

  • Assess the structural repair, prepare ACV/RCV valuation reports, reserve calculations and complete a control estimate/scope through Xactimate.

  • When necessary, establish control scope for tender process which may involve a mix of premiere and non-premiere contractors providing competitive bids, including a construction schedule and progress draw schedule.

  • This role is highly collaborative and includes working closely with assigned specialists depending on the complexity of the loss. This may include but is not limited to: Structural/Electrical/Mechanical Engineers, City Building Officials, Code Experts, Hygienists and Architects.

  • Negotiate terms of any Cost-Plus projects. Monitor the project as required, communicating status updates to the handling adjuster in alignment with internal requirements.

  • Conduct site inspections as required with respect to ensuring compliance to construction schedules in addition to recommendations on progress draws.

  • Control building related costs and increasing efficiencies while maintaining a high level of superior customer service.

  • Staying on top of emerging construction practices, standards and materials.

  • This role is accountable for the timely and accurate reporting.

  • Interpreting Engineer drawings and specifications.

  • Producing tender documents and cost - plus agreements.

  • Being able to effectively investigate and analyze variances in bid submissions;

  • Establishing accurate building reserves, calculating replacement cost value and actual cash value reporting.

  • Recommending and implementing action plans for proceeding with emergency mitigation, demolition and structural repairs.

  • Collaborating with Specialists, Engineers, and provide thorough feedback and establish action as required in accordance with Aviva protocols and best practices. This process may also include Project Management and the management of required Experts, all while working in tandem with the assigned file handler, Supervisor or Regional Claims Manager.

  • Complete re-inspections for progress and/or any change in scope.

What you'll bring:
  • Minimum 5 years Residential and Commercial Appraisal experience in a senior position (losses in excess of $250K) including indepth knowledge of both commercial and residential building construction practices.

  • Minimum 10 years of Xactimate scoping and estimating experience at a senior level.

  • Sound ability to create comprehensive estimates using appropriate software.

  • Strong knowledge of valuation tools: 360Value, Marshall and Swift

  • Strong knowledge of the residential and commercial construction industries.

  • Strong knowledge of claims adjusting practices.

  • Problem solving and analytical skills balanced with strong decision-making ability.

  • Excellent communication skills required to effectively articulate complex issues to senior management, colleagues, business leaders and external partners.

  • Intermediate Microsoft Word, Excel & Outlook skills.

  • Post-Secondary education or working toward completion of the Insurance Institute program (CIP / FCIP)

  • Solid understanding of the Water Damage Standards of IICRC S500 and have WRT and ASD certifications

  • A solid understanding of construction is required both commercial and residential

  • Highly adaptable to the fast-paced environment and can communicate clearly to interested parties

  • Ability to communicate respectfully and compassionately

  • Good attitude and be customer oriented, flexible to accommodate partners in time zones across Canada

Salary range: $79,500 - $125,000
