Job description

Overview:

The Language Access Coordinator works with the Director, Language Access to provide daily facilitation and maintenance of equitable access to language services and systems. The incumbent will act as a facilitator between institute staff and vendors via the Hopkins Language Access program to ensure that patients and families receive appropriate interpretation and translation services. This position requires the incumbent to be bilingual in English and Spanish with a proficiency level that meets the Institute’s minimum standards.

Responsibilities:
  1. Monitors daily emails from Hopkins Language Access Services with interpreter schedules and compares with patient appointments to ensure services are aligned and available when needed.
  2. Serves as point of contact for staff that have clinical appointments (in person or telehealth) involving an interpreter. Ensures that interpreter services are available when or where needed.
  3. Serves as the primary liaison between Johns Hopkins Language Access Services (JHLAS) and Kennedy Krieger staff for interpreter and translation services across the institute. Provides feedback to JHLAS from institute staff if there are issues with interpretation services during clinical visits.
  4. Maintains list of American Sign Language (ASL) vendors and coordinates requests for ASL interpreters for clinical, research, and educational purposes.
  5. Provides staff training regarding Kennedy Krieger Language Access services and best practices for interpretation and translation services. In collaboration with Human Resources, provides support to bilingual/multilingual staff who are interested in improving their language skills.
  6. Provides timely ticketing system responses regarding frequently asked questions about interpretation and translation services at the Institute.
  7. Maintains an ongoing relationship with the Kennedy Krieger International Office to ensure consistency of interpretation and translation services across the institute.
  8. Maintains CyraCom (and similar systems) and Video Remote Interpretation (VRI) devices across Kennedy Krieger locations in collaboration with the Information Systems Department, ensuring that equipment is functional and ready for staff usage.
  9. Serves as a primary point of contact for the Human Resources department regarding the maintenance of the staff Language Certification program.
  10. Assists Director, Language Access in collecting and assembling Language Access data as part of compliance and Quality Improvement reporting.
  11. Assists Director, Language Access with financial management and reconciliation tasks as needed. Connect and align invoices with clinical services and validate invoices as needed to ensure invoices are aligned with services provided.
Qualifications:
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish with a proficiency level that meets Kennedy Krieger’s minimum standards. Able to speak Spanish fluently with ease and confidence in a variety of topics related to work, home, leisure activities, as well as events of current, public, or personal interest or individual relevance. Able to convey intended message with accuracy, clarity and precision without misrepresentation or confusion while being readily understood by native speakers.

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in health care administration, human services, or language related field preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires at least three years of experience coordinating patient services in a medical setting, preferably with children and families with special needs.
  • Prefer experience with interpretation or translation services.
