The Need

For over 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. 9 out of 9 times in the last decade, IJM’s Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50 and 85% for very large populations of people in poverty. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people from violence, we are seeking a Global Sr. Specialist, Research to lead research work in forced labor/slavery (FL/S). This person will have excellent technical skills, be proficient at collaboration across teams, understand on-the-ground realities, and drive toward ethical, valuable, and ground-breaking research work. They will serve as leaders for IJM’s FL/S research portfolios and IJM’s and partners’ research staff. 

This position is hybrid (onsite Tuesdays & Thursdays) if located in the Washington, DC area or remote for non-local candidates and reports to the Global Vice President, Measurement. Successful candidates must have the right to work within the country in which they reside.

Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management

  • Set and drive organizational research agendas.

  • Lead global change management and adoption efforts on research agendas.

  • Secure acceptance of research agenda among academia, industry experts, and other influential audiences.

  • Amend research agenda when needed to match changes in global vision, mission, and strategies.

Technical Research Expertise and Data Analysis

  • Develop technical guidance on research methodology, approach, planning, execution, and dissemination.

  • Provide technical services to specific research projects.

  • Conduct routine data quality assurance reviews.

  • Participate in organizational reviews of specific research projects and of the research portfolio.

  • Participate in research steering committees and similar bodies with oversight of specific research studies.

  • Perform data analysis on research data.

Policies and Procedures

  • Develop and update/maintain all processes, standards, guidance, and tools necessary to collect, analyze, and interpret research data at field, regional, and global levels.

  • Provide technical input on research data security, documentation, management, and disposal practices, in line with relevant policies and guidelines.

  • Review research and other policies and standards to ensure alignment with industry best practices.

Training and Development

  • Train or coordinate training of relevant staff on all aspects of research, including use of tools, sampling methods, data management, and appropriate data analysis/interpretation.

  • Develop and resource professional development opportunities for IJM and partner research staff.

  • Lead a community of practice for IJM and partner research staff.

  • Contribute to training on measurement, project management, and other topics, as needed to ensure alignment with research policies and standards.

Networking & Partnership

  • Collaborate closely with IJM’s global measurement staff, program and other staff, subject matter experts, relationship managers, and partners on all aspects of the research work.

  • Lead and support other staff to disseminate IJM research results.

  • Secure publication in key journals and presentations at key conferences.

  • Engage in relevant research forums and networks.

  • Develop partnerships with research organizations (including academic institutions) to support IJM’s research and programming work. 

  • Participate in IJM’s community of spiritual formation.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of relevant research experience:

    • Research design, methodology, and implementation to success.

    • Experimental and quasi-experimental designs.

    • Forced labor/slavery issues.

    • Principal investigator/lead researcher roles.

  • Field research on the ground in one of IJM’s main program areas (Africa, Latin America, South Asia, or Southeast Asia).

  • Graduate degree in any discipline; evidence of training in research methods.

Technical Competencies

  • Proven ability to apply knowledge of current and emerging forced labor/slavery research methods to specific research studies. Able to spot and seize opportunities to innovate.

  • Proven ability to accommodate real-world operating conditions into research designs and plans. Able to move forward absent ideal conditions.

  • Track record of providing valuable and actionable research insights to teams.

  • Track record of effective communication to executive, technical, and non-technical audiences alike.

  • Experience working successfully across teams, especially in a matrix-like structure.

  • Experience in training, coaching, mentoring, and supporting research staff.

  • Experience authoring and publishing peer-reviewed academic research and presenting at conferences and industry events.

  • Experience organizing policy/communication events as well as producing policy resources and publications.

  • Proven commitment to upholding ethical research standards.
