Position


The Director, Marketing plays a pivotal role in advancing SEPA’s brand awareness, audience development, customer journey evolution and performance of the marketing team. This role involves developing and executing marketing strategies that drive engagement and action with a particular focus on supporting revenue-generating initiatives. The Marketing and Communications (MarCom) department includes Communications and Market Intelligence teams.  The Director will collaborate with the Communications team to ensure alignment in messaging and storytelling and with Market Intelligence to strengthen SEPA’s analytics and determine the organization’s key differentiators. Collaborating with stakeholders across SEPA, the Director uses data-driven insights to ensure impactful marketing efforts are aligned with SEPA’s objectives. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with tactical and strategic marketing experience who is able to lead and inspire others.


The salary range for this position is $140,000-$160,000 with the target being around $150,000 based on experience.


Requirements


Strategic Marketing Expertise

  • Uphold and enhance SEPA’s brand image and positioning in the clean energy ecosystem through a rebrand process led by the VP, Marketing and Communications and implemented by the marketing team.
  • Oversee the marketing team’s management of SEPA’s website, email campaigns, and online advertising to enhance brand awareness, drive customer engagement, and increase member dues and non-dues revenue.
  • Prepare and manage the marketing budget in partnership with the marcom team, ensuring maximum ROI on marketing investments.
  • Analyze and interpret key metrics to refine marketing strategies. Lead the team’s use of data and potentially AI to drive decision-making and measure the effectiveness of campaigns.

Team and Cross-org Collaboration

  • Collaborate with all internal SEPA teams to align marketing strategies with organizational goals and oversee the team’s development, execution, and analysis of marketing campaigns for research publication launches, events, online training, membership, sponsorship, and other non-dues opportunities.
  • Participate collaboratively in the annual planning process and bring the customer perspective to the rest of the team.
  • Work collaboratively with the Communications and Market Intelligence Directors to ensure brand standards are upheld and integrated across all marketing channels.
  • Support the Communications team in creating compelling narratives that resonate with SEPA members and the broader clean energy community.
  • Work with the Director, Market Intelligence to monitor market trends, evaluate analytics, conduct competitor analysis, and understand customer behavior to continuously adapt and refine marketing strategies.
  • Lead and manage the marketing team, ensuring clear roles, responsibilities, and objectives are set as the team develops and implements marketing campaigns for the organization. Provide mentorship, feedback, and guidance to nurture professional growth.

Tools and Innovation

  • In partnership with the Marcom team, oversee relationships with external vendors, agencies, and partners to ensure maximum value and alignment with SEPA objectives.
  • Continuously assess and improve the effectiveness of the marketing tools and platforms in use by the team.
  • Stay updated with the latest marketing technologies and best practices, and be willing to experiment with new marketing techniques. 
  • Ensure high quality campaigns are developed and tactics are executed by team members accurately and on time.

Engagement

  • Represents SEPA externally by attending and speaking at key industry events to raise SEPA’s visibility and establish credibility for our work.
  • Presents research findings and SEPA’s perspectives at conferences and events organized by SEPA, RE+, and external organizations.
  • Represents SEPA externally by supporting the team at RE+
  • Converts content into various formats working with SEPA’s marketing and communications teams to identify and implement communications strategies. This may include webinars, podcasts, SEPA conference sessions, blogs, infographics, slide decks, industry articles, or other formats as requested.
  • Works with SEPA’s marketing and communications teams to publicize findings externally through social media channels.
  • Manages and grows the Microgrids Working Group
  • Network with other members of the industry to raise awareness about SEPA and recruit them to join as members; works with the membership team on outreach and engagement strategies.
  • Provides member support in the form of responding to requests for in-person presentations, workshops, facilitation services, and member-sponsored resilience research or advisory services.
  • Serves as project lead for industry convenings and special projects and initiatives as assigned.
  • Other tasks as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing or equivalent marketing experience with 10+ years of proven increasing responsibility.
  • Marketing leadership experience with strong track record of growing awareness and audiences.
  • Familiarity with AI, content hubs, agile marketing, transmedia storytelling, and the evolving customer journey.
  • Familiarity with Pardot and Salesforce.
  • Association budgeting experience a plus.
  • Strong written, analytical, and oral communication skills.
  • Self-reliant, good problem solver, results oriented. Ability to execute independently and as a member of a team.
  • Staff management experience that includes coaching staff, setting clear expectations, adapting to changing conditions, and correcting performance issues.
  • Familiarity with the energy and electric utility industry preferred.
