Project description

The Special Education (SPED) Department of the Ministry of Education & Human Resource Planning Vocational Training & National Excellence in Dominica, Eastern Caribbean has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRVs) to serve as a Visual Impairment Support Teacher Trainer. Visually impaired students in Dominica are placed in the general school population and follow the national curriculum and standards of the Ministry of Education; however, there are no trained professionals working with blind students within the education system, which causes visually impaired students to experience limited success across the education system. The SPED Unit is seeking to train a cadre of teachers who will be able to provide a quality education and basic support for visually impaired students including learning to read braille and mobilization training for their independence.

The PCRV will be part of a working team that includes an officer from the SPED Unit, Principal and two teachers from a school selected by the unit. The PCRV will implement best practice support for teachers and school principals who work with visually impaired students in an inclusive setting and support the identification and development of resources needed for the success of student teaching and learning. The PCRV will also collaborate with the principal and teachers at that school to implement a training program to teach visually impaired students.

Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in the Eastern Caribbean together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
