Project description

Advancing Health Professionals (AHP): a Peace Corps Response program, is seeking a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as Psychiatric/Mental Health Specialist Educator with University of Eswatini (UNESWA) without the provision of direct medical care to patients or clinical supervision of students. The position requires a master’s degree in psychiatric/mental health nursing or a physician-psychiatrist, experience in curriculum development and review, teaching and research supervision at the university level, grant proposal writing and grant management and flexibility to serve in under-resourced settings. A PhD or doctorate and good mentoring, clinical and research skills are desirable.

The Department of Community Health Nursing Science within the Faculty of Health Sciences is in the process of finalizing a proposal for a master’s degree in child and adolescent mental health. The exchange of best practices in nursing education in psychiatric/mental health through the Response Volunteers will strengthen the quality of the curriculum for both programs and the quality of the graduates produced by the program. Peace Corps Response Volunteers will work alongside local faculty to teach and mentor Psychiatric/Mental Health nursing students. Furthermore, the Department philosophy of promoting health for communities through evidence-based practices requires continuous engagement in research. The Response Volunteer will help in equipping the department staff with grant proposal writing and management skills, to assist in strengthening and promoting mental health.

The PCRV will participate in development and review of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate curricula in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, provide lectures to psychiatric/mental health undergraduate and graduate nursing students, train and advise department staff on research grant proposal writing and grant management, supervise undergraduate and graduate in advanced research methodologies, assist department in identifying and developing short courses, attend meetings, student graduations ceremonies. PCRVs are expected to report on their activities twice during their service.

Peace Corps Response established its "Advancing Health Professionals" program in 2019. Response Volunteers serving with the AHP program seek to improve health outcomes on a societal level by providing high-level, specialized service in the health sector. AHP projects include health professions educators, health systems strengthening, service delivery improvement, and other non-clinical interventions that enhance the quality of healthcare.
